1904 New Haven World’s Prom

5/10/2016

Picture
By Emily Lewis
Everyone knows what prom is but do you know how it first came about?

The word prom is short for promenade: the formal, introductory parading of guests at a party. At the high school level, proms were a regular event by the early 1900s. These turn-of-the-century proms were generally simple affairs where youth came only to dine together in their Sunday best. However, by the 1920s and 1930s, dancing had also become an essential element of the prom. Rather than a simple gathering, prom became an annual class banquet where students met with each other and danced afterward.

Day 3
We woke up this morning around 7 o’clock, and our first stop of the day was at the Monticello. We arrived there around 8:40 in the morning and were there until 11 am. Our next destination was Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, in Virginia! From there, we ventured off to Washington D.C., where we stopped and toured Arlington cemetery and watched the changing of the guards. After Arlington cemetery, we hit the town in search for some yummy food! Around 8:00, the seniors headed to their hotel for the night.

New Haven High Celebrates Blue Ribbon Award

12/18/2015

Picture
By Emily Lewis

In honor of their Blue Ribbon award, New Haven High School hosted its celebration last Thursday afternoon. This joyous ceremony consisted of Minute to Win It challenges, various speakers, and entertaining videos.

To begin, Mr. Hoener put the highly selective award into perspective. The criteria to earn a Blue Ribbon award is very extensive. Schools are not all allowed to apply, but they are recommended by Missouri’s education system. New Haven High School was the only public high school in Missouri to secure this year’s Blue Ribbon.

One of the things that stood out the most about our school was our continuously high test performances. A school must achieve success in the either of the categories for Exemplary High Performing standards, which means that the school has obtained high standardized test scores for many years, or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing, which means previously low scores have been raised significantly.
