East Central College Outstanding Student Award Given to Jonathon Stone

5/14/2018

It’s rare to find Jonathon Stone without a smile on his face. His enthusiasm and positive attitude are contagious. It’s no surprise that he excels at an East Central College Student Ambassador – giving tours and sharing his knowledge with potential students.

“His ability to connect with prospective students and parents has been an invaluable resource to East Central College,” explained Sara Marler, East Central College Admissions Representative. “Jonathon is highly praised by those he works with and is always humble about the praise he receives. He has been an excellent representative of East Central College.”

His hard work and dedication to the college is why he was chosen as the 2018 Outstanding Student Award winner at the 47th Annual Spring Commencement.

“Jonathon brings joy to my days,” said Shelli Allen, Vice President of Student Affairs. “The youth, energy and positivity that he brings into the workplace infects all of us.  He shows up on time each day, ready to take on whatever new or different tasks await.”

The Outstanding Student Award is the highest award given to an East Central College graduate. It is awarded to one student who embodies academic excellence and contributes to the life of the campus community. The honoree is selected by a vote of the faculty and staff who thoughtfully consider academic achievements as well as extracurricular involvement.

To be considered for the honor, an ECC student must have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Participation in campus and community activities are also considered.

In addition to his role as a Student Ambassador, Jonathon was also a member of the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. Outside of East Central College, Jonathon was passionate about helping others. He volunteers with Franklin County Young Life, a Christian outreach program for adolescents, where he listens to the stories of young people and learns about their joys, triumphs, heartaches and setbacks.

Jonathon graduated with Highest Honors, and will continue his education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where he plans to study business marketing and participate in the U.S. Air Force ROTC program.

National Honor Society hosts annual Ice Cream Social in the city park

5/14/2018

By: Olivia Williams

National Honor Society, NHS, hosted its last meeting of the 2017-2018 school year on Friday, May 11.  They celebrated finishing the school year with an annual Ice Cream Social held at the city park.

Members of NHS brought various toppings and other sweet treats for everyone to enjoy. These toppings included whipped cream, candy, and chocolate syrup. Mrs. Oelrichs, the NHS sponsor, provided the members with vanilla and chocolate ice cream.

This event is held each year to celebrate various things, such as welcoming the new inductees this year and saying goodbye to the seniors who are graduating. The Ice Cream Social is a nice way for members to end the school year and get to know the new members for the club.

Before the Ice Cream Social, Grace Soete was asked what she was most looking forward to. She simply stated, “Free ice cream. Duh.”

Kamryn Poe said she was looking forward to all the delicious toppings that would be at the Ice Cream Social.

Kenzie Bauer said, “Anyone who knows me knows my favorite food is ice cream. And to get to eat and spend time with the other members is going to be fun.”

The NHS members had a wonderful time in the park, eating ice cream and spending the last few days of school with their classmates. They were all in agreement that this was a great way to wrap up the school year.

Annual Spring band concert wraps up the school year

5/11/2018

By: Grace Soete

On Tuesday, May 8th, the Spring band concert took place at New Haven High School. Grades 5-12 played 3-4 songs and received several different medals. The elementary grades could win awards for “Most Valuable Player”, “Most Improved Section”, and “Most Valuable Section”. The high school students were recognized for their performance in marching band, pep band, district, conference, state band, and the students who lettered.

After the high school band performed 2 songs, the seniors had a chance to say a few words to sum up their accomplishments and memories throughout the 8 years of band. This was also the time Mrs. Koch announced the winners of the Carol Bounds Music Boosters scholarship, Michelle Bahena, and the John Philip Sousa award, Liz Hughes.

After each grade performed their own songs, all of the grades combined to play a “master blaster” song. Mrs. Koch stated, “I think it's good to get the younger kids to sit and play next to the older kids for experience. It is also cool to hear how big of a sound we get when we all play together.”

Overall, Mrs. Koch commented, “I thought it was maybe one of our strongest concerts, maybe the best we've ever given, since I’ve been here. All the grades did very well. They all exceeded my expectations for the year.”

Senior Michelle Bahena reflected, “It was really memorable, especially with the touch Liz’s speech gave. I was super excited to have been awarded the Carol Bounds Music Booster scholarship because ever since I was younger I admired the seniors that were awarded it. I was also proud of Liz for being awarded the John Philip Sousa award.”

Claire Meyer, junior, commented, “Overall I thought it was good. It was cool to hear the progression of the grades throughout the years. It'll be very weird without the seniors next year because we've been playing with them for a while now.”

Congratulations to Mrs. Koch and all of the band students for another successful year!

Shamrock baseball drops a close one to Cuba

5/11/2018

By: Jake Wilson

On Monday, April 30, the Shamrocks put up a good fight, but in the end came up short, falling to Cuba 4-3.  The Shamrocks kept it close throughout the game, but the Wildcats always had an answer.

Facing the Cuba pitchers, senior Ryan Blankenship went 1 for 3 with a run batted in and a stolen base.  Fellow senior Owen Buchheit also went 1 for 3 with a run batted in.

Senior Owen Buchheit commented, “I still continue to see improvement game-by-game.  We kept it close, but we just came up short. We did get a couple of key bunts down, and made some other textbook plays.  We just have to stay consistent and crank up the intensity.”

Buchheit got the start on the mound for the Shamrocks, throwing 5 ⅓ innings, giving up 3 hits, and striking out 5.  Junior Christian Paterson threw 1 ⅔ innings, giving up 1 hit, while striking out 2.

Sophomore Jay Eichelberger stated, “We kept it close the whole way through.  It definitely was a winnable game. We just have to make the easy plays and stay consistent throughout.”

While the Shamrocks’ final regular season games concluded, the Shamrocks will begin district play Saturday, May 12, in Louisiana against Crossroads.  Good luck, boys!

Shamrock Conversation: Mrs. Anderson

5/10/2018

By: Callie Weatherly

Mrs. Kelsey Anderson is the current business, marketing, accounting, and keyboarding teacher as well as the supervisor of FBLA. She is also one of the class sponsors for the class of 2019.

Mrs. Anderson graduated from Hermann High School. She got her Bachelor’s from Missouri State University, and from there she went to University of Central Missouri for her Master’s degree.

Regarding her decision to teach, Mrs. Anderson explained, “I graduated Missouri State with a Bachelor’s in Communication and started working after graduation at a company that worked with school districts and another where I worked with college campuses. My job with these employers had many different roles, however I gravitated to the training aspect in each of them. After several years of feeling unsatisfied with my job, I decided that I wanted to return and obtain my Master’s to teach high school business and therefore went back to University of Central Missouri to do just that.”

We are all glad she came to join the NHHS staff, which she has been a part of for 2 years. However, most are wondering about her pregnancy.

Mrs. Anderson reports that her baby is due on the 21st of this month. Although, she and her husband do not know the gender.

When asked why they decided to keep the gender unknown, Mrs. Anderson explained, “Tyler and I both wanted it to be a surprise as we felt like it would be one of the greatest surprises we could ever have. We are getting very antsy, though, at this point.”

When you see pregnancy on TV, it is often depicted with very bright and high expectations of perfect, no-issues-whatsoever pregnancies, and the mothers just magically know everything. However, according to Mrs. Anderson, that is not accurate.

Mrs. Anderson said on the topic of expectations, “Honestly, I didn't know what to expect. I went into it without a lot of expectations, just because I know from so many of my friends that everyone's pregnancy is so different. I really tried to just take everything in and ask questions along the way if I had them. I'm extremely lucky in that I have had great support from family and friends along the way that have been through this and they have really been able to answer any questions I have had.”

Mrs. Anderson has said she is most excited about being able to see and hold her child, and see her husband, Tyler, hold their child.

On the topic of hearing any horror stories, Mrs. Anderson explained, “No one needs to hear the horror stories of others. Besides, once that little baby is in your arms, I heard it is all worth it!”

We are all excited for you, Mrs. Anderson!  Congratulations!

New Haven High builds selfie station for Miller’s Landing Day

5/10/2018

By: Lexi Oetterer

Mrs. Katie Borcherding, art teacher at New Haven High, was asked by the Chamber of Commerce to create a selfie station as one of the activities for people to do at the Miller’s Landing Day Memorial on Saturday, May 5th. For this project, Mrs. Borcherding, along with Abby Grater, decided to remake a scene from a historic New Haven photo of the Tilda Clara.

Mrs. Borcherding was asked why she was doing this project, and she replied, “I think it is important for the students to work with the community.”

Mrs. Borcherding, along with some of the students at New Haven High (including Abby Grater, Savanna Hanna, Lexy Sidwell, Cecelia Malone, and Christian Paterson), has been working for the past three weeks to create the photo booth. The Chamber of Commerce is picking up the finished project at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, May 4th.

Mrs. Borcherding was asked about how she felt about the finished project, and she said, “I like it. I think the design is really fun. It took us a long time to decide what to do, but the recreation of a historic New Haven photo I think was a really good idea.”

The students who helped work on the project were asked what they felt about the project as a whole.

Junior Christian Paterson replied, “It’s all right, and I think it’s cool.”

Junior Cecelia Malone said, “I like it a lot-- I think it's a very creative way to get people to recognize the memorial.”
