The sun shined--no, the sun beat--on September 17 in Steelville, where the cross country boy’s team won the Steelville Invitational for the second year in a row, with frontrunners Nathan Ford and Julia McIntyre taking first in both varsity races. With temperatures reaching upwards of 90 degrees, this was a hot one.

The Shamrocks couldn’t be bothered by the boiling temperatures.

Coach John Tucker says, “looking at the times, both my boys and my girls teams ran well. We’ve been running in the heat and we’ve been hydrating well, so I really don’t think it was a factor for us.”

Missouri on pace to complete 47.5-mile extension of Katy Trail from Windsor to Pleasant Hill, Gov. Nixon announces

9/21/2015

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today announced that by the end of 2016, Missouri State Parks expects to complete the extension of the Katy Trail from Windsor to Pleasant Hill along the Rock Island Trail State Park. The 47.5-mile-long extension will allow hikers and bicyclists greater access from the Kansas City region to the 240-mile long Katy Trail, which runs from Clinton to St. Charles County.

“One of my top priorities as Governor has been to improve and expand our outstanding state park system and give Missouri families and visitors even more ways to enjoy the outdoors,” Gov. Nixon said. “At a time when other states were closing state parks or charging entrance fees, here in Missouri we worked hard to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities by expanding access to affordable outdoor recreation. This extension of the nationally-recognized Katy Trail will continue to provide Missourians and visitors alike with an outstanding opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Show-Me State.”

Presented by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New Haven

The Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of New Haven will host its 26th annual Balloon Race Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m., at the New Haven City Park.

The race includes more than 20 hot air balloons from across the Midwest.

The race is a hare and hound race, which means that the hare balloon takes flight first and marks an “X” where it lands. The hound balloons follow and try to drop a bean bag onto the X. The balloon that drops closest to the mark wins the race.

Balloons begin inflating for launch between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting.
The New Haven Chamber of Commerce also will host balloon festival activities on race day, including a parade at 1:00 p.m. To enter a float for the parade, contact City Hall at 237-2349 or complete the parade entry form.

Refreshments and food will be available for purchase, as well as a bounce house and a little Mr. and Miss contest.

Park Drive will be closed for both events. Spectators are encouraged to park on Lion’s Drive or in the New Haven High School and municipal swimming pool parking lots. Both events are free and open to the public.
