The Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of New Haven will host its 26th annual Balloon Race Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m., at the New Haven City Park.
The race includes more than 20 hot air balloons from across the Midwest.
The race is a hare and hound race, which means that the hare balloon takes flight first and marks an “X” where it lands. The hound balloons follow and try to drop a bean bag onto the X. The balloon that drops closest to the mark wins the race.
Balloons begin inflating for launch between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting.
Refreshments and food will be available for purchase, as well as a bounce house and a little Mr. and Miss contest.
The third annual Balloon Glow will be held Friday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the New Haven City Park. The event offers spectators a breathtaking view of inflated hot air balloons lighted by their burners. Visitors can walk around the balloons and meet the pilots.
Park Drive will be closed for both events. Spectators are encouraged to park on Lion’s Drive or in the New Haven High School and municipal swimming pool parking lots. Both events are free and open to the public.
