NHHS Students Sell It at State

4/30/2015

New Haven sent 27 students to State this year, along with sponsor Mrs. Strickland. “I think they did really well!” exclaimed Mrs. Strickland. Some students who competed are eligible to compete at Nationals, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois,  June 29th through July 2nd.

Hannah Kruse, Kayla Watson, and Lindsey Nixon placed 2nd in marketing as a group, and Kayla Watson also placed 3rd in Accounting 2. “We worked really hard and were super nervous for the outcome, but we ended up doing really well!” Kayla explained . All of these girls are eligible to compete at Nationals.

Emma Eichelberger placed 4th in Sales Presentation. Emily Lewis had a top 8 finish in Business Presentation. Dakota Schroeder, Emma Borcherding, and Maddie Fleer finished in the top 8 in Emerging Business Issues. Maddie and Emma were both very excited to place in the top 8.  In fact, after their initial presentation, they did not think they would advance.  When Mrs. Strickland told them they had made it, they were shocked.  Maddie recalled, “It was exciting and thrilling.”  After their event was over, Maddie and Emma both saw FBLA state as a rewarding experience.  Emma pointed out that “there were great speakers” at the event, and Maddie said that she met “many cool people who were outgoing and driven.”

While the students were in Springfield, they also took time to watch the Springfield Cardinals play a game, which they won. Dylan Goodwin really enjoyed seeing the game. “The trip was fun, and I even caught 3 foul balls at the baseball game!” proclaimed Dylan. Beth Schenck also went to FBLA state. “It was fun, I'm glad I'm in FBLA and had the opportunity to attend this year's competitions.”

The students definitely enjoyed the trip, and most said they will probably attend FBLA state next year, hoping  to see another baseball game and further their business skills.

The Time to Cheer is Near

4/29/2015

The tryouts started off with Coach Munsinger introducing herself and stating, “Coach LuAnn will no longer be coaching due to health issue.” She then went on to say that they were in the process of looking for a new co-coach for the team. Even with this sad news for the veterans, the tryouts continued as normal. Once seated, each girl took their turn at stating their names so they could become familiar with each other.

When every girl got done introducing herself, Coach Munsinger divided the girls into three groups that included newbies and veterans. Audrey Ford commented, “It was comforting to know you would have veterans showing you the cheers so you wouldn’t have to learn them yourself.” The veterans had to teach the girls four new cheers: “Shamrocks Got the Fever,” “Shamrocks Lets Do it,” “We Are the Shamrocks and We’ll Ugh Knock You Out,” and “Big G Little O.” To show off their creativity, the girls had to come up with new movements for the cheer “Shamrocks Got the Fever.”

Once the girls were comfortable with the cheers, the tryouts begin. Each group was called up one at a time and performed their cheers as a group, except for “Big G Little O,” which was performed individually. When the cheers were done, each girl showed off her two best jumps and had the option to tumble.

The tryouts ended with Coach Munsinger thanking the girls for coming and stating that the results would be posted on the office window Friday morning.

The 2015-2016 NHHS cheerleading squad is made up of Jennifer Alvarez, Stephanie Russo, Emily Moreno, Emily Lewis, Lexie Nixon, LeeAnna Linton, Megan Boehmer, Audrey Ford, Mikayla Maloney, Lexi Otterer, and Grace Soete.

New cheerleader Mikayla Maloney exclaimed, “It was an interesting experience, and I am glad I got in because I have been waiting to tryout since day one. I would encourage others to do it because it’s fun.”

With this year ending and another beginning, New Haven High’s cheerleading team is ready to start a great season with the addition of five new cheerleaders.

Track Athletes Compete At Cuba

4/27/2015

At medal meets, schools can only enter two athletes in each event. Before the medal meets, unlimited entry was allowed. This means any number of athletes can be in a certain event. The reduced number of athletes made the meet go by faster.

Despite the heat and humidity, New Haven athletes ran, sprinted, threw, and jumped very well. New Haven’s girls team had won the Cuba meet two years in a row, but this year they lost by one point to St. James. The boys team got seventh place in the meet.

Many medals were awarded to New Haven track athletes at this meet. The top eight in each event earned points towards their team score. The boys’ 4 by 400 meter relay got fourth, while the boys’ 4 by 800 meter relay came in third. Emma Engelbrecht received fourth in the 100 meter hurdles; Molly Munsinger placed fourth in the 200 meter dash; Taylor Covington won third in the 400; the girls’ 4 by 100 meter relay earned second place; the girls’ 4 by 200 meter relay won first; the girls’ 4 by 400 placed second; the girls’ 4 by 800 got first; Lauren Gerlemann won 1st in shot put; Lauren Bergner received third place in shot put; Brooklyn Covington got first in discus; Tenille Duessler won third in discus; and Emma Englebrecht earned first in triple jump.

“All relays got season bests at this meet, and we had great performances in the throwing, jumping, and individual running events.” Mr Tucker, head coach for the track team, commented.

Several personal bests were achieved at this meet: Nathan Ford gained a new best in the mile; Brooklyn Covington threw almost 86 feet in discus; and Lauren Bergner threw almost 30 feet in shot put, after which she said, “I was really excited to throw my very best throw! It’s been something I’ve been trying to do for a while now.”

Also, Lauren Gerlemann made her first appearance in the 4 by 800 meter relay at this meet. She felt it was a great experience, saying, “I was very nervous to be running with a group of seniors, and I didn’t want to let them, or Mr Tucker, down. I was running on pure adrenaline with a time goal in my head. Once I started the race, I began to relax and just ran without thinking too much.”

Mr Tucker explained, “It was a great team effort for the girls’ team. We were missing the two best jumpers (Beth Schenck and Ereka Bailey), but the girls pulled through to deal with those lost points.”

Everyone will compete again in Hermann, Tuesday, April 28th, after the seniors return from Senior Trip. The South Calloway Invitational will be Friday, May 1st.

The New Haven track team boarded the bus at approximately 1:45 PM on an uncharacteristically warm and humid day Friday, April 17th, to travel to Cuba for their 2nd medal meet of the year.

NHHS Choir Sings to the Sky

4/27/2015

However, due to the Skills USA competition, Jenny Gallardo was unable to attend.  “I'm a little upset that I didn't get to go along with the choir to compete, but I'm also glad that I had the chance to compete at state for Skills USA,” she explained.

Each member of the honor choir auditioned individually in front of Mrs. Taylor.  The candidates sang an arrangement picked by Mrs. Taylor, and she announced who had made it after everyone had auditioned.

At the contest, choir members were judged on a scale from one to five,  with one being the best and five being the worst.  The choir performed two choral arrangements at the state competition, Misty Morning and Gaudeamus Hodie, and received an overall rating of a three on the performance.   “We did really good, but I feel that we could have improved some aspects of the music as well,” Zoie Mathis explained.

Brittany Willimann stated, “The contest for me was pretty scary.  It was a very large theatre, and the stage lights were very hot, but after the performance and sight reading were done, it was very fun to watch the other choirs and compare as well as do a little exploring of the building with my friends.”

After performing, the choir group sight-reads, or sings an unknown piece of music, after only having 30 seconds to practice.  The choir received a four on this area of the contest.  “The music was difficult to read,” senior Karissa Durbin commented. “It was hard with how little time there was to study the music.  I feel we would have done better if the music wasn't in ¾ time.”

Once sight-reading was over, Mrs. Taylor took the group to watch different schools perform, including Hermann, Washington, and Owensville high schools.  Washington and Hermann had their mixed choir, boys’ choir, and girls’ choir perform that day.

The choir will be attending the contest again next year in hopes to improve their rating and earn the “one” they have been longing to get.

Powerforture.com goes a little deeper into the defintion of a good luck charm by defining it as "an object, which upon possession delivers a positive influence to the fortunes of a person, or set of persons."

Day 2 - Sunday April 19, 2015

And we’re off again! This morning we left the hotel around 7:30 and drove about an hour to Asheville, North Carolina to the Biltmore! As we pulled up to the gates everyone’s jaws dropped in awe of the beautiful estate. Once inside, we went on about an hour tour through the house where we saw the living quarters, library, bowling alley, swimming pool, and much more. After the tour we walked outside, opened our umbrellas, and viewed the gardens and green houses. Some of us hiked down a trail to see the bass pond and waterfall. We then boarded back onto the bus and began our six hour drive to the University of Virginia's campus. This campus dates back to 1819 and is the first University to be centered around a library, rather than a church. President Thomas Jefferson is responsible for its design, which we will learn all about him and his history on Monday as we will drive to Monticello and visit his home. Today we drove about 450 miles!

Looking for Alaska: Find This Book

John Green, successful author of novels such as Fault in Our Stars; Will Grayson,Will Grayson; and Paper Towns, released a book long before the rest. The book Looking for Alaska shows how Mr. Green’s style has evolved throughout his books. Being one of his earliest books, it is written in a tone that seems less experienced than his newer books. His book is not a terrible novel, nor is it one you should pass by. However, if you don’t connect with the storyline from the beginning, it may not ever come into clarity.
