It's a New Year!

12/21/2015

Picture
By Rachel Connell

A new year is right around the corner. This year is flying by quickly with no time to spare for Christmas shopping or gift wrapping. In a blink of an eye, school will be out, winter will begin, and Christmas will soon be over. But what comes after Christmas?

New Year's Eve is a major social holiday for many people in the United States as the start of the new year. Many people hold parties at home or attend special celebrations to welcome the upcoming year. In many cities, large scale public events are held, such as the annual ball drop in Times Square. The ball is dropped at 11:59 and hits the ground at exactly midnight, which is a tradition that started in 1907. Although much of this celebration occurs the night before, the merrymaking typically continues into New Year's Day. Football is a common fixture on New Year's Day in America, especially the Rose Bowl game.

According to Patricia Weatherly, junior at New Haven High School, “What I enjoy most about New Year's is the chance to take the past year's failures and turn them into next year's successes.”

Shamrocks Fight in a Tough Game Against the Indians

12/18/2015

Picture
By Ereka Bailey

The Shamrock girls basketball teams faced the Pacific Indians on Monday, December 16. The junior varsity girls fought hard throughout the whole game, and it was a close game. With 7.2 seconds left of the game, the Shamrocks had the ball and the score was 26-30 with Pacific in the lead. Freshman Mackenzie Munsinger dribbled to the top of the key and went up for a three-pointer and made it, turning the score to 29-30 with Pacific still in the lead. Pacific had the ball with only about 2 seconds left of the game and tried to pass it down the court, but New Haven stole it back. By the time they could throw up a shot though, it was too late. The buzzer rang out and the game ended with Pacific at 30 points and the Shamrocks at 29.

The varsity team had just about the same fight with the Indians. Three minutes into the game, the score was already 6-5, showing that it was going to be a close game if players all kept playing with determination. In the first quarter, scores went back and forth, but eventually Pacific took the lead of three points with the score 13-10.

Shamrock Conversations: Emily Lewis

12/18/2015

By Taylor Gillespie

Emily Lewis is a junior at New Haven High. She has three brothers and two sisters, and she currently lives at home with her mother and father. Emily Lewis was recently named one of six students across the nation to be recognized by The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Emily and five other students in the United States have been given the opportunity to engage students, take leadership, engage in service, and speak to students all across the nation.

The application process started during school one day. Mrs. Borcherding informed her about the organization that involves both NHS and STUCO on a national level. Since Mrs. Borcherding was on maternity leave, Emily found out about the application a week before the application was due. “I had about 2 days to fill out the application, and then I had to mail it right away. I was majorly freaking out because there were essays that I had to complete and I like to take my time when writing anything like that,” Emily expressed. Although the process was difficult, it was worth it in the long run for Emily.

New Haven High Celebrates Blue Ribbon Award

12/18/2015

Picture
By Emily Lewis

In honor of their Blue Ribbon award, New Haven High School hosted its celebration last Thursday afternoon. This joyous ceremony consisted of Minute to Win It challenges, various speakers, and entertaining videos.

To begin, Mr. Hoener put the highly selective award into perspective. The criteria to earn a Blue Ribbon award is very extensive. Schools are not all allowed to apply, but they are recommended by Missouri’s education system. New Haven High School was the only public high school in Missouri to secure this year’s Blue Ribbon.

One of the things that stood out the most about our school was our continuously high test performances. A school must achieve success in the either of the categories for Exemplary High Performing standards, which means that the school has obtained high standardized test scores for many years, or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing, which means previously low scores have been raised significantly.

A Breath of Fresh and Cold Air

12/18/2015

By Taylor Gillespie

December 22nd is New Haven’s last day of school before winter break, which ends on Monday, January 4th. Many students are excited to get their finals over with and start fresh next semester. The final week of school seems to be the most stressful for students because each of them is trying to get their grades up so they don’t have to take a final. Teachers, on the other hand, are more focused on preparing their kids for finals and setting them up to pass.

Three days after Winter Break starts, it will be Christmas! Many people around the world anticipate this time of year. It is a time to gather around people you love and cherish while eating delicious foods and giving and receiving sentimental gifts. Many people exchange gifts, and some people even participate in secret Santa exchanges with friends and family. A fellow secret Santa, Madeline Fleer, said, “I am looking forward to hanging out with my friends and getting turnt with them...off of jolly good christmas feelings! Like: lip sync battle and gift exchange!”

Not only are presents exciting; food is a very popular high theme of excitement as well. A fellow New Haven High Senior, Jonathan Stone, said, “I’m going to eat stuff. A lot of stuff.”

Five Things You May Not Know About Christmas

12/17/2015

Picture
By Patricia Weatherly

Everybody in America is knowledgeable when it comes to the topic of Christmas.  Families put up a tree, pass around presents, and eat food.  However, I bet there are a few things you didn’t know! Even the Grinches and Scrooges may not know these ten unusual Christmas facts:

  1. “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas.  James Lord Pierpont, the composer of this popular song, originally wrote it in the 1850s during Thanksgiving for his Sunday School class.  His reason for this song was to commemorate the Medford sleigh races.  This song became so popular that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas.

Missouri’s high school graduation rate increases again, ranks in top 10 in the nation, Gov. Nixon announces

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Missouri’s graduation rate surpassed the national average across all racial and ethnic groups and underserved populations, including students with disabilities. From the 2010/2011 to the 2013/2014 school year, Missouri’s high school graduation rate rose 6 percentage points, from 81 percent to 87 percent.

“These rising graduation rates reflect the solid progress that students are making all across our state,” Gov. Nixon said. “More students graduating from high school means greater economic opportunities for them, and a more competitive workforce for our state.  Moving forward, I will continue to work across the aisle to strengthen and improve public education in Missouri.”

By Lauren Bergner

On Tuesday, December 15th, the Shamrocks boys’ basketball team played their first Four Rivers Conference (FRC) game at home. Not only did this game mark the first FRC game, it was also the last home game for the boys in 2015.

The night started with an intense double overtime game for the Junior Varsity. On the night, freshman Martin Lewis had 17 points, and junior Mark Senecal had 10. Although the Shamrocks had some big scorers, the Indians came out on top, overall winning 49-47.

Going into the varsity match, the Shamrocks knew it was going to be tough. Senior Jared Horstmann stated, “In order to win, we needed to play a perfect game. But just working hard was our main focus. I was excited to get out on the court and play. It's kind of bittersweet playing this team one last time.”
