What cross country athletes are thinking of this upcoming season

8/31/2018

By: Alex Trentmann

The New Haven cross country team had their first meet on Saturday, August 25th, at the St. Clair Airport. New Haven competed against Union and St. Clair, with New Haven finishing first overall. The next meet for the team is the New Haven Short Course Invitational on September 1st. The athletes have been training since August 6th-- going through speed, endurance, and hill workouts to prepare for what lies ahead of them this season.

The athletes were asked what they are looking forward to this season, and senior Joseph Rethemeyer said, “I am prepared for districts this season and what other meets have in store.”

“Seeing what we can do at Districts and State with us being in Class 2,” answered senior Cecelia Malone.

The next question was if the athletes think the team is ready for what lies ahead this season, and junior Grace Allgaier said, “I feel like we aren't ready yet, but over the season, I think Coach Tucker will be prepare us for what's ahead.”

“I think if we have a great mindset, set our priorities straight, and work hard to improve a little more each day, we will be prepared. It's not that we aren't prepared now, we can get even better than we already are throughout the season,” responded freshman Emily Delgado.

“Yes, I can't wait to see what this year brings to us as we have very talented runners with us that all have their own strength in different parts of our races,” answered sophomore Caroline Otten.

Next, the team was questioned if they are planning on improving this season, and senior Martin Lewis replied, “I, of course, plan on improving my time.”

Lauralie Grater, junior, said, “My time is my main focus of improvement this season.”

“I plan on getting faster and improving my time,” responded Emily Delgado.

The last question asked to the cross country athletes was how they feel about the season so far.  Joseph Rethemeyer, senior, answered with, “It's a love-hate relationship for the most part, but I'm excited to see how this season goes.”

“I've always loved cross country, even if I'm not very good at it. So, so far, it's pretty awesome,” said senior Cecelia Malone.

Good luck to the New Haven cross country team for their meet on homeground on Saturday, September 1st!

New Haven volleyball jumps into a new season

8/30/2018

By: Lexi Oetterer

The first volleyball game of the season was on Monday, August 27th, at Borgia High School. This year there are two new assistant coaches, Mrs. Julie Westermeyer and Miss Rachel Horstmann.

“I decided to get back into coaching because our district had a lot of open coaching positions,” said Mrs. Julie Westermeyer. “I have coached high school, middle school, and elementary volleyball in the past, and it just seemed like the right time to get back onto the court.”

“I have always wanted to return to New Haven to work as a Teacher of the Deaf, and with that I also knew I wanted to be a part of the New Haven volleyball program as well because it was such a big part of my high school experience,” said Miss Rachel Horstmann. “So, when Coach Hoener asked me to coach there was no way I was going to turn down an opportunity that I have always wanted.”

According to the Mrs. Hoener, this year's team motto is P.U.S.H.-- meaning Persist Until Something Happens. The volleyball team will use this motto to help them achieve their goals during their season. The coaches were asked what they were hoping to achieve with their teams this year.

Mrs. Jaime Hoener replied, “The team's goals are to be conference champions, win our tournament, win districts, and play in the state tournament.”

“I am very excited for the upcoming season,” said Miss Horstmann. “I was eager to be coaching the freshman team because not only is this a new experience for them, but also for myself. We are learning and building as a team together. Throughout practice we have already improved in strength and areas of communication, so I hope it continues as we begin playing other teams.”

“I am excited to be working with this group of girls because they are so fun to be around,” replied Mrs. Westermeyer. “Coach Hoener has established a highly respected volleyball program that not only teaches girls about the sport, but they are also learning to be good citizens in our community. I am so happy to be a part of that.”

The varsity team was also asked what their individual goals for this year are.

“I hope that we can beat all the other people's expectations about us,” said McKenzie Pecaut, a setter and outside hitter.

McKenzie Overschmidt, outside hitter and left back, replied, “To win more games than last year! To make it past districts!”

The senior athletes were also asked how they felt about this being their last season.

Makenzie Munsinger, back row, said, “I am going to miss playing the sport.”

“I’m excited, but sad at the same time. The last three years have been fun, and I’m hoping this season will be the same, but obviously I’m sad about this being my last season,” said Grace Soete, middle hitter.

Good luck to the volleyball team this upcoming season, and best of luck on achieving your goals.

IndieFlix Shines the Light on Anxiety with Must-See Documentary, “ANGST: RAISING AWARENESS AROUND ANXIETY”

8/27/2018

NEW FILM CREATED TO START COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ANXIETY &
PROVIDE TOOLS, RESOURCES & HOPE SCREENS ON
Monday, September 10, 2018 AT the Walt Theater, 111 Front Street, New Haven, MO
IndieFlix, a leading independent online streaming platform, along with its non-profit arm, the IndieFlix Foundation, is sparking a global conversation about anxiety through screenings of its  documentary, “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety”.  On Monday, September 10, 2018, the New Haven School District will hold a special screening of the documentary  to open up a dialogue between local families, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a reception with free pizza at 6:00 p.m., viewing of the 56-minute film at 6:30 p.m., followed by an informative panel discussion led by school counselor, Eileen Roth  and a group of community mental health experts.

Producers Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In addition, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help, resources and tools available to address the condition.

Free tickets are now available and space is limited!. Click here to reserve tickets - https://www.showclix.com/event/angst-new-haven-mo

Part of the beauty of this film is the openness of the children and young adults featured; for some of them, the “Angst” project marks the first time they are publicly sharing their experiences with anxiety. Our hope is that their candidness and bravery will inspire our community to do the same.

While “Angst” documents the struggles some people have with anxiety, it also reveals their hope for the future. Noah, a teenager in the film, describes it this way: “Anxiety doesn’t define me. It’s not just a curse; it also gives me strength.”

"Everybody needs to know that anxiety disorders are real, common and treatable instead of viewing them as a personal choice or something to be ashamed of,” said Dr. Jerry Bubrick, Senior Director of Anxiety Disorders Center, Child Mind Institute. “Getting help early is crucial in giving people the tools they need to feel better. We just need to start the conversation."

"We felt it was important to make a movie that could raise awareness to open up the conversation and provide hope," said Andreen, IndieFlix CEO and “Angst” Producer. "So many people struggle with anxiety and have trouble talking about it. We want to change that."

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., impacting 54 percent of females and 46 percent of males, with age seven being the median age of onset, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety – from the producers to the interviewees.

"The conversation surrounding mental health really hits home for me,” said Michael Phelps. “Many people don’t understand how debilitating mental illness truly can be, and even more than that, how common it is, yet people are afraid to have the serious discussions about it. I welcomed the opportunity to be a part of ‘Angst’ to further the dialogue around mental health and to help people understand the impact anxiety has on our mental state and encourage people, especially kids, to ask for help."

“Angst” screens in schools and communities across the world. The IndieFlix original film is expected to reach more than three million people around the world, through 25,000 community and school screenings

Discover nature on a 250-acre prairie, complete with a tepee and sod house, during a full day of family fun and entertainment.

GRAY SUMMIT, Mo.--Take a step anywhere in the St. Louis area today, and there’s a good chance that 200 hundred years ago that same step might have landed on prairie grass.  Before European settlement, prairie land covered a large portion the Greater St. Louis area.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and Shaw Nature Reserve are partnering to present Prairie Day Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The biennial event will take place at Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit.

Prairie Day is a celebration of the nature and culture of our grassland heritage.  Shaw’s 250-acre restored prairie is the backdrop for a day of fun and educational activities for the whole family where visitors can relive the times of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

There will be plenty to do from stepping inside an authentic Native American tepee or a sod house to witnessing a blacksmith practice his ancient trade.  Visitors can watch flint knappers hone their historic skills, learn the secrets of basket weavers and quilters, and try their hand at an old-fashioned butter churn.

There will be hay wagon rides and opportunities to play traditional pioneer games like “rabbit sticks,” plus throwing the atlatl and tomahawk.  Visitors will have the chance to learn living history first-hand from a mountain man and re-enactors of other early prairie pioneers.  MDC will bring live reptiles and there will also be mammal pelts to see and touch.

Prairie Day offers a way to learn the natural history of the Great Plains first hand. Find out about the plants and animals of the of the tallgrass prairie.  Interpreters will engage visitors with educational presentations on ways Native Americans and pioneers used native edible and medicinal plants.

Naturalists will guide visitors on hikes to learn about the prairie and its unique natural characteristics. Displays will allow the public to discover how to attract fun-to-watch wildlife by including native plants in landscapes. Visitors will be able to choose from a wide assortment of prairie wildflowers and grasses available for purchase from a local native plant nursery.  Live bands will entertain with a variety of modern and traditional folk tunes. Food will be available for sale, including bison burgers and a variety of homemade baked goods.

No registration is required.  Admission is $6 for adults, $2 for children (ages 15 and under) and $3 for Missouri Botanical Garden members. Proceeds help support the nature reserve. Visit https://tinyurl.com/ybg7yzrr,  or call 636-451-3512 for more information.

The Shaw Nature Reserve is located on the south side of I-44 at exit #253 in Gray Summit, less than 10 miles past the Six Flags exit and only a 40-minute drive from the Metro St. Louis area.

Prairie Day is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation and Shaw Nature Reserve, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
