What cross country athletes are thinking of this upcoming season

8/31/2018

By: Alex Trentmann

The New Haven cross country team had their first meet on Saturday, August 25th, at the St. Clair Airport. New Haven competed against Union and St. Clair, with New Haven finishing first overall. The next meet for the team is the New Haven Short Course Invitational on September 1st. The athletes have been training since August 6th-- going through speed, endurance, and hill workouts to prepare for what lies ahead of them this season.

The athletes were asked what they are looking forward to this season, and senior Joseph Rethemeyer said, “I am prepared for districts this season and what other meets have in store.”

“Seeing what we can do at Districts and State with us being in Class 2,” answered senior Cecelia Malone.

The next question was if the athletes think the team is ready for what lies ahead this season, and junior Grace Allgaier said, “I feel like we aren't ready yet, but over the season, I think Coach Tucker will be prepare us for what's ahead.”

“I think if we have a great mindset, set our priorities straight, and work hard to improve a little more each day, we will be prepared. It's not that we aren't prepared now, we can get even better than we already are throughout the season,” responded freshman Emily Delgado.

“Yes, I can't wait to see what this year brings to us as we have very talented runners with us that all have their own strength in different parts of our races,” answered sophomore Caroline Otten.

Next, the team was questioned if they are planning on improving this season, and senior Martin Lewis replied, “I, of course, plan on improving my time.”

Lauralie Grater, junior, said, “My time is my main focus of improvement this season.”

“I plan on getting faster and improving my time,” responded Emily Delgado.

The last question asked to the cross country athletes was how they feel about the season so far.  Joseph Rethemeyer, senior, answered with, “It's a love-hate relationship for the most part, but I'm excited to see how this season goes.”

“I've always loved cross country, even if I'm not very good at it. So, so far, it's pretty awesome,” said senior Cecelia Malone.

Good luck to the New Haven cross country team for their meet on homeground on Saturday, September 1st!
