For this assignment, Summer School Adventurers were asked to write a creative story incorporating elements of fantasy, such as magical powers, mystical creatures, imaginary worlds, and a quest/journey. By Daniel Huff (8th Grade) In the land of Alanar, there was a young man named Mason. He grew up as the apprentice of the great swordmaster, Bord, a knight who fought in the Dragon Wars: a series of wars where the elves from the North and humans from the South teamed against the dragons and the black dragon king, Taconium. The dragons were created thousands of years ago by humans using dark magic, called Methanic, to alter their bodies. The elves and humans beat the dragons and forced them to retreat to the canyons in the east. For this assignment, students were asked to write a story in which they are the villain.
By Rachel Connell I look over the horizon of the city, watching as the sky changes from a dull blue to burnt oranges and crisp reds, following the burning ball of fury. I clench my fists by my side, knowing what will come of the night. Car horns blare and sirens wail throughout the city below, throwing me into the growing reality of my plan. Not only will I have him on my tail tonight, I will have the police and SWAT team right behind me. I never really thought about the police force taking part to reverse my devious plan to infiltrate the city, but will it really change my mind? No, definitely not. For this assignment, students were challenged to use indirect characterization techniques--characters' appearance, actions, thoughts, dialogue, and other' characters' reactions--to show a character's personality.
