By Emily Lewis Rachel Bartels and her sister, Wilhelmina, are the owners of the coffee shop located downtown New Haven at 123 Front Street. The coffee shop, The New Day Mercantile, is an addition of the Front Street Artisans. The National Blue Ribbon Celebration will begin this Sunday with a parade through town at 1:30. The community is then invited to attend a ceremony in the Community Gymnasium at the high school following the parade. The celebration has been created by high school students and features speakers from the high school, community, and alumni. Please join us to celebrate New Haven High School winning this prestigious national award. New Haven Middle School 7th grade art students, Ethan Sullivan, Jon Russo, and Dylan McGlenn had work on display in the most recent exhibit at New Haven's Scenic Regional Library branch. The students were assigned the task of creating a 3-dimensional artwork using only triangular pieces that was inspired by the work of architect, Frank Gehry.

On March 29, at approximately 10:00 PM, deputies responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping that occurred on Parkway Drive near Hwy 30. The 25-year old female victim stated that she was walking east on Parkway Drive toward Highway 30 when an older model blue in color Ford F-150 truck passed her going the opposite direction. She stated the truck turned around and began coming back towards her stopping alongside. She stated that the male slid across the seat, opened the door and grabbed her left arm, attempting to pull her into the vehicle. She then pulled away and began running toward Mount Zion Church. The victim stated that the vehicle attempted to follow her but the motor kept dying. The driver then drove away. By Lauren Bergner In late February, the middle school students were given an assignment to write a persuasive letter convincing a company to send products. Earlier in the month, an article ran regarding an 8th student who had received a response from the company Mystery Tackle Box. A few weeks later, several more students received a variety of products from their desired companies. Seventh graders Dori McCarty and Reece Garren together received 100 books from Scholastic, which are being donated to the school library. Other seventh graders, such Grace Faris and Emilee Hinten, received Expo markers from Expo, and sheet protectors from School Specialty. In the eighth grade, Jay Eichelberger and Demetri Pataky were both presented with items from their companies. Jay Eichelberger received a baseball bat and mitt from Rawlings. Demetri Pataky received stress balls from the United States Navy. Congratulations middle school students! By Lauren Bergner “The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing.” On Friday, March 18, New Haven Elementary hosted Family Day. The event started at 8:30 A.M. and ended at 10:00 A.M. Students were encouraged to invite their family members for a fun- filled event. American Pickers, a TV show on the History Channel, will be coming to the area in May. They are looking for leads on private collections of antiques, memorabilia, etc. They have emphasized they only want private collections and not flea markets, antiques shops, etc. The Franklin County Jets Track Club is coming to Washington, Mo to provide area youth (ages 9-18) with opportunities to participate in organized track and field training and competition.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that Brent Newton of Holts Summit became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he hooked a record goldeye on the Osage River using a rod and reel. Goldeyes are a part of the mooneye family. They are silvery, flat-sided fishes with unusually large eyes and prominent teeth on the jaws, roof of the mouth, and tongue. Anglers often mistake the goldeye for the skipjack herring while fishing for bait. By Lauren Bergner Take a moment and imagine yourself at a New Haven High School boys basketball game. The teams are close in score, and the time is ticking down. Shamrock fans are sitting all around the gym anxiously watching with excitement. Picture the players on the court. Next to the players on the bench sits a man who has had an impact on the boys basketball program at New Haven High--he is the assistant coach, and his name is Derek Bailey.
