It's Cool, It's Red, and It's Got Lines on it

New Haven’s track is finally finished after all of the hard work the community put into it. As a whole, New Haven raised $368,000 for the track project. New Haven had their first Town Hall meeting on November 21st of 2013 and now, two years later, the track is completed. The high school’s principal, Mr. Hoener, stated that the new track is currently available for use by the community and that we hope to host our first track meet in 2017 or 2018.

For the next step, the committee is planning ways to fund-raise for the amenities that come with the track, such as lights, sidewalk, restrooms, and storage.

Junior, Damian Gale, showed excitement by saying, “The new track is a great thing for New Haven and I can't wait to run on it in the spring!” Fellow students, teachers, and community all have a positive outlook for future track users. Many people believe the track is a great surface for running and that the location of the track is convenient. A track that is close is cheaper for residents since they no longer have to drive out of town to use another track.

Mr. Hoener also said, “The new track will impact our community as a whole, our school, our track team. Other schools will just take our track for granted since they always had a track. It's very appreciated here.”

Best of luck to future track users and thank you to everyone who contributed to the donations for the New Haven Track Project!

The annual American Enterprise Breakfast was held on Friday, November 20th.  New Haven High School’s FBLA chapter held the breakfast for local businesses.  Approximately eighteen business men and women from local business, including those from Bank of Franklin County, Citizens Bank, and People's Savings Bank, attended the breakfast.  FBLA hosts the breakfast to show appreciation for local businesses and to thank them for being a huge resource to the community.

Laura Strickland, New Haven’s FBLA sponsor, stated “I always enjoy this day. It's a lot of work and an early morning, but it is nice to meet with the local businesses, and I think the kids get a little lesson in business etiquette.”  Mrs. Strickland also uses the breakfast to discuss field trips and speaker opportunities.

Senior Class Anticipates Senior Trip

11/20/2015

By Nate Offard

Senior trip is a highly anticipated event for the seniors at New Haven High School. There are many places the seniors always visit while they are on the trip; a few of these destinations include New York City, The Smithsonian, the 9/11 Memorial and Mount Vernon. Since the trip is still being planned, much is still up for debate. One thing is for certain though, this year’s Senior Class is excited about it and had much to say.

Before these seniors get to their many destinations, they have a fairly long bus ride ahead of them.  This ride is estimated to be around 40 hours, and they will stop at least once every 3 hours. Lauren Bergner said “The bus ride is going to be long, but it will also be a lot of fun. With movies and the best classmates in the world, the ride will definitely be entertaining.”

Several students are especially excited for the Broadway shows. Andrew Menke said “I'm excited for Broadway because I've only heard good things about it!” Brooke Bockting said “I absolutely cannot wait! I've heard that any Broadway show is great. And the atmosphere is to die for!”

Leadership Breakfast Triumphs

11/19/2015

By Clare Roth

The annual leadership breakfast, hosted by Student Council, was held Tuesday, November 17, in the art room. This week is Leadership Week at New Haven High, so the leaders of all the clubs and classes in the school were invited to attend a pancake breakfast to celebrate their accomplishments.

This year, freshmen members Andi Wideman and McKenzie Munsinger of Student Council were invited to cook the food with Mrs. Katie Borcherding, StuCo advisor. This didn’t exactly go as planned. Mrs. Borcherding says “I had some trouble flipping pancakes at first because I tried to make them too large.  I also roasted the pecans until they were completely black.  It was disgusting.  My mistake.”

Chocolate chip, blueberry, and regular pancakes were served, along with strawberries, bananas, and whipped cream. Beverages included milk and orange juice.

Engelbrecht Receives HOBY Leadership Award

11/18/2015

Picture
Mr. Doug Peirick, Counselor, has announced that Emma Engelbrecht, daughter of David and Jodi Engelbrecht of New Haven, has been awarded the 2015 Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation (HOBY) Leadership Award for New Haven High School.

Ryan Winters, representing the New Haven Lion's Club, is shown at the left presenting Emma with the check to cover the cost of the seminar.

Last year approximately 9,000 high school sophomores--tomorrow's leaders--participated in HOBY's Leadership Seminars in the United States. Emma will be invited to the Missouri seminar to be held in the summer of 2016.  This all expense paid state seminar will bring together a select group of high school sophomores with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and the professions to discuss present and future issues in America's incentive system and the democratic process.  During the state seminar, two participants will be chosen to attend the HOBY World Leadership Congress to be held next July.

All sophomores were eligible for nomination.  Emma was chosen by her teachers because of her leadership ability, strong decision making skills, and participation in service activities.

Emma plays volleyball, basketball, and runs track.  She is a member FBLA, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and FCCLA.  She has been on the high honor roll both semesters of her high school career, an FBLA state finalist, 2nd team all conference in track, has earned the President’s Physical Fitness Award, and a member of the 2015 Academic All Conference Volleyball Team.  Emma was also voted to the 1st Team All District Volleyball Team.  She also participates in the FBLA sponsored community service activities along with many other community service projects.

Emma plans to attend the University of Missouri – Columbia and major in Biology/Pre-Med studies.

The New Haven Lions Club, as they have done for the last several years, is supporting the students at New Haven High School by covering the cost of the HOBY seminar.

Picture
By Ereka Bailey

Every year, the New Haven High School Student Council organizes a Veterans Day breakfast in the school’s cafeteria and all of the local veterans are invited to attend. This year the breakfast was held on Wednesday, November 11th at 7 am.

Members of the student council made all of the food that morning and also helped with serving coffee and other beverages. Members also decorated the cafeteria the previous night. One member of student council, junior Emily Lewis, even put together a video for the veterans to watch.

This year, many interviews were conducted with various veterans. A group of men were all sitting together talking about old memories and they answered a few questions. These veterans were asked whether they had ever attended the breakfast event before. Three of the four men said that they have been before, but the other man said that this was his first year attending.

Every year the Chemistry II class puts on a show for the local fourth graders where they demonstrate different science experiments while adding a Halloween twist.
The class spends multiple weeks researching experiments, writing scripts, and practicing their demonstrations.

Originally scheduled for October 30, the Chemistry II class had to postpone their annual Halloween show until November 5th due to the victories of the New Haven volleyball team.

Both Mrs.Parmentier’s and Mrs.Ryle’s classes from New Haven Elementary School, as well Mrs.Steiger’s class from Franklin County R-II, attended.

DIY Road Trip Hacks for the Holidays

11/12/2015

Picture
By LeeAnna Linton

With Thanksgiving and Winter Break right around the corner, many people are going out of town for the holidays. Whether you are going to the next county over or another state, these 25 car hacks will help make your car ride fun and more enjoyable.

  1. Help entertain your kids with a DIY travel book. You can create pages of activities for your kids to do independently in their carseats.
  2. Send yourself a message in the bottle to remind yourself of all the fun you are having on your outing together.
  3. Create a bucket pulley system. This is great to get things to the back of the car without stopping on long trips.
  4. Create a temporary tattoo of your phone number and put it on your child’s hand when you are traveling or attending a big event, so then if they get lost someone can contact you.
  5. Use silicone cupcake liners as inserts for your cup holders. They can hold loose coins and are a quick and easy clean.

  6. Purchase a truck organizer to hold groceries and a middle cooler.
  7. Hang shelves in the trunk to open up floor room for any essentials.
  8. Have a single serving tableware ready for unexpected meals on the road.
  9. Use easter eggs as snack packs, they are easy to pass out and perfect for portion control.
  10. Cover the seats with a fitted crib mattress sheet, you will protect and keep your seats clean.
  11. Create a mini emergency kit of things you may need throughout the trip: extra cash, nail clippers, medicine, band-aids, ponytails, etc.
  12. Put jumper cables in your car incase you or someone else needs them along the way.
  13. If you use reusable tote grocery bags, fill a bin and store them all in your trunk.
  14. Keep an inflatable bed, blankets, and pillows for extra comfort and relaxation.
  15. Poke a hole into the lid of a water bottle and add a straw for an instant “sippy cup”.
  16. Use a tension rod, to avoid jackets and bags from piling up on the floor.
  17. Make a seat belt cover out of a small plastic cup to avoid your child unbuckling themselves.
  18. Use a sponge as a back-up ice pack, soak it in cold water and put it in a ziploc bag.
  19. Organize essentials using an old magazine rack.
  20. Make sure you bring all charging devices for your electronics.
  21. Drop a pin on your iPhone if you leave your vehicle, so then later you can find your car easily when you're in an unknown place.

  22. Use a binder clip to make your own DIY phone mount.
  23. Use a cereal container as your own mini car trash can.
  24. Use dryer sheets as air fresheners.
  25. Use shoe organizers as cubbies for the children’s activities.

Hopefully you try some of these out for yourself and enjoy them! Happy Road Tripping!

11/11/2015

By Clare Roth

It was cold and rainy in Bowling Green, Missouri, on October 31, but that didn’t stop the Shamrocks from winning districts for the second straight year. Both the boys and girls teams placed first overall, advancing each team to the State Cross Country Meet in Jefferson City. Freshman Julia McIntyre also earned her own individual first place medal, becoming the Class 1 Girls District 2 champion.

McIntyre had a gutsy performance with a time of 20:53, winning by over a minute to second place Chamois senior Autumn Baker.

McIntyre, followed by junior Lucy Roth (7th, 23:49), junior Emily Lewis (8th, 24:17), senior Clare Roth (9th, 24:33), freshman Audrey Ford (18th, 26:31) and sophomore Natalie Hoerstkamp (20th, 26:57), led the team to a first place finish with a total of 23 points.

The boys won with a team finish of 22 points. Led by sophomore Nathan Ford (2nd, 17:58), the Shamrocks ran as a pack, with the top five finishing in the top 8. Freshman Joseph Rethemeyer came in after Ford (3rd, 18:31), followed by freshman Tim Madden (4th, 18:48), sophomore Ryan Blankenship (6th, 18:54), senior Keven McDowell (7th, 18:56), senior Jon Stone (8th, 19:01) and freshman Martin Lewis (14th, 19:27).

A Sneak Peek at Basketball

11/9/2015

Picture
By Taylor Gillespie

“We gonna be a team that wins. If you ain’t first, you’re last,” Abraham Madden states about the 2015 basketball season. The New Haven Shamrocks basketball teams are stoked for this season! After speaking to many of the players, the outlook for this year comes along with positive attitudes and competitive players! Last year, the Shamrocks beat Sullivan for the first time in 5 years! They are hoping to keep it a tradition.

After having an up-and-down season last year and not making it to State Championships, the teams still worked really hard to stay strong and came out to work even harder for this year. Andrew Menke had a few words to say, “I think the season will be strong. I feel that we will be a surprise to certain people including people in our community.  Our team is a bunch of misfits who love to play ball.”
