Mail your letters to Santa at Scenic Regional Library New Haven

11/30/2020

Picture
“Letters To Santa, Letters From Santa” begins on Tues, December 1st
The Scenic Regional Library New Haven branch has been in contact with the North Pole and is happy to announce the “Letters To Santa, Letters From Santa” campaign!
From December 1st-15th, children can bring their letter to the New Haven Library @ 200 Douglas St and mail it in Santa’s mailbox in the lobby. Letters may be dropped off during regular business hours (Mon-Wed-Fri 10-6, Tues & Thurs 11-7, and Sat 10-3). In addition, letters can be mailed in downtown New Haven on Fri. Dec 4th during the Christmas by Moonlight event.
Santa, of course, knows where each child lives; however, the post office needs home addresses to deliver the letters. Because each child at the same address will receive a different letter from Santa at home, it is very important that the child’s name and complete home address are correct and legible. No postage necessary.
Happy Holidays!

Volleyball finishes fourth at State

11/30/2020

By: Ellie Westermeyer

The Shamrocks beat Greenfield on Saturday, Oct. 31 at sectionals in Appleton City. The New Haven volleyball team headed to state on Thursday, Nov. 5. After this big win, the girls packed their bags to travel to Cape Girardeau to play in the 2020 MSHSAA state volleyball tournament.

The volleyball team beat Greenfield in three sets. This sectional win led the Shamrocks to a ticket to the state tournament.

“Beating Greenfield was amazing; knowing that I was going to state, even better,” senior Maria Sheible said. “Going to state was something that I had dreamed of when I first started playing volleyball, so I am glad that I made it happen, especially during my senior year. I was also very lucky that I had the opportunity to even play this year due to COVID-19.”

On Thursday, Nov. 5, the New Haven students sent off the girls to state by cheering them on outside as they left.

“I loved it! It was great to see everyone cheering us on and wishing us luck,” Sheible said. “It definitely still puts a smile on my face when I think about it. It always will. It's a great feeling knowing that you have so many supporters and people that wish you the best.

”
The team’s first state game was on Friday, Nov. 6 against Advance High School. The Shamrocks lost in three sets against the back to back state champions.

“I think that we had a lot of unforced errors. Advance was a good team and they played really well, but if we had cut down on our unforced errors, then it would have been a closer game,” Sheible said.

Due to the loss against Advance, the Shamrocks then played Midway on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

“The game against Midway was a lot better. We played a lot more aggressive and gave all of our effort. However, Midway did the same thing. It was a very close game,” Sheible said.

The match against Midway was the last game of the season. The team hit .122 for the match with 31 kills on 12 errors and 156 attack attempts.

“After the last game, I was absolutely devastated,” Sheible said. “It was the last time playing my favorite sport. I made some memorable bonds with my team and love every single one of my teammates in many different ways. If I was ever having a bad day, they always made me forget about it.”

The New Haven volleyball team finished fourth place at the state tournament. It had been three years since New Haven had made an appearance at state in volleyball.

“Volleyball is a mind game. You have to be mentally in it just as much as you are physically,” Sheible said. “Of course there is always room for improvement. You just have to tell yourself that you can do it.”

Girls basketball players share thoughts on upcoming season

11/30/2020

By: Caroline Otten

With the basketball season in full swing, the New Haven girls basketball team has been practicing preparing for their season. Their first practice was Nov. 2nd, as they have been practicing ball handling, shooting, and just the fundamentals of basketball. The athletes have games coming up closer by the day and they all have been keeping new goals in mind as the new season begins.

“My goals are to extend my shooting range and prove to the coaches I can play with everyone,” freshman Aubri Meyer said.

Other athletes simply said how they want to improve and just get better as an individual and team.

“Some goals are personally getting better, but also working as a team to get better and achieve our team goals that we set at the beginning of the season,” junior Natalie Covington said.

Senior Ellie Westermeyer added she hopes to play as many games as possible and to stay healthy.

The athletes also added how excited they are for the new season and what they are most excited about.

“I’m most excited to actually get to play this season, due to COVID. I am also looking forward to playing with my teammates,” freshman Elizabeth Luecke said.

While many athletes may not get the chance to play in a sport with their sibling, senior Madison Langenberg is most excited for being on varsity with her younger sister, sophomore Brenna Langenberg.

“I'm mainly excited to just be able to play this season because I was out last year due to an injury,” junio Emma Rohlfing said.

There are also five seniors playing their last year of highschool basketball this year. These athletes are Grace Faris, Madison Langenberg, Caroline Otten, Hannah Rethemeyer, and Ellie Westermeyer.

“Basketball may not be my most favorite sport, but I definitely will miss it,” senior Madison Langenberg said. “I'll miss the large crowds cheering us on at home games and all the fun memories my teammates made with each other. I am sad that our last year has to be so different with the global pandemic going on and when it's over, I'll be coming back to watch my sister play her heart out her last couple years of high school.”

“I am definitely very sad that it is my last season and I hope our season can last as long as possible,” senior Ellie Westermeyer said.

Good luck, Shamrocks, on your season!
