The Spring concert featuring bands and choirs took place Tuesday, May 3rd and Thursday, May 5th. By Lauren Bergner What can the power of persuasive writing do? Matthew Laune, an 8th grader at New Haven Middle School, is finding out first hand. Matthew’s teacher, Mrs. Westermeyer, gave her students an assignment: to write a persuasive letter urging companies to send samples, promotional items, or other kinds of products. By Bethany Thomas
National Junior Honors Society is for New Haven middle school students, and members are chosen for their outstanding performance in school and the community. NJHS helps middle school students prepare to take on a leadership role when they make it into the high school’s NJHS. It is very honorable to be chosen for it; however, it is not easy to meet all of the requirements. By LeeAnna Linton Every summer, the Scenic Regional Library hosts a Summer Reading Program for students in elementary and middle school to encourage them to read during the summer months. The theme this past summer was “Every Hero has a Story.” Students have to earn eight badges in order to complete the reading program. A badge can be earned by reading, attending a library program, or completing activities such as volunteering, writing, or reading to younger children. Every student that completes the program receives a book and a River City Rascals baseball ticket. Furthermore, these students were entered into a drawing for St. Louis Cardinals tickets, Meramec Cavern passes, and Magic House passes. Congratulations to the following New Haven students for completing the summer reading program: Elementary: Shauna Boehmer, Joseph Borges, Katie Gaynor, Jayla Pataky, Kaitlyn Taylor, and Blake Vedder Middle School: Hannah Boehmer and Chloe Lueckenhoff For more information on next year’s summer reading program you can go to http://www.scenicregional.org or visit the Scenic Regional Library: New Haven Branch, 901 Maupin Avenue. By Clare Roth On August 20, the New Haven Park Board was greeted with some fresh new faces. Middle school student Ellie Westermeyer and elementary students Julia Faris and Gracie Steele made an appeal to the Park Board about pool renovations. Jordan Rulo, along with several other students, attended to observe the meeting. Farris and Steele approached the Park Board with ideas for a bigger slide or a swirly slide, rock climbing walls, and the possibility of a bigger pool. Ellie Westermeyer recommended the addition of music “to make things more fun.” The night started off with the three choirs coming together to sing the song “Sing to Me.” Next, the elementary school took the risers to sing three songs: “Cameroon,” “A Child’s Credo,” and “Michael Finnegan.” Once the elementary choir finished performing, there were some awards to be given. The rookie of the year awards were given to the following: Dakota Bridges, Mikayla McFerrin, Aubri Meyer, and Ellie Westermeyer. The most valuable singer (MVS) award was given to Shauna Boehmer, Casey Jo Baker, Madison McCarty, and Abby Seitter. Following the elementary choir was the middle school choir. They performed “Like the Beat of the Drum,” “All the Pretty Little Horses,” and “Blackbird.” The awards were given after the song “All the Pretty Little Horses.” The middle school’s rookie of the year award was given to Luke Gerlemann. The MVS awards were given to Samuel Penny and Russell Pinnell. The last choir to take the stand was the high school choir. They performed four songs: “Brush Strokes,” “Say Something,” “I Hope You Dance,” and “Songs of a Disney Princess.” The song “I Hope You Dance” was a dedication to the seniors from the rest of the choir. The seniors were asked to be seated as the choir sang the song. Senior Karissa Durbin stated, “The dedication song almost made me cry. It was almost bitter-sweet because that night it finally hit me that it was my last high school choir concert.” Stephanie Russo commented, “My favorite song was ‘Songs of a Disney Princess,’ even though many people got emotional in the ‘Say Something’ song.” When the choir finished, Mrs. Taylor, choir instructor, announced the awards. Anna Miller received an All District Choir and National Coral Student Award. Nichole Zeitmann, Anna Miller, and Hanna Fitts received an award for attending state as a trio. Mrs. Taylor stated, “I think the concert went very well, and I am very proud of all the students who worked hard so that it went well.” Overall, to end the 2015-2016 school year, the elementary, middle, and high school had a successful choir performance. -Jenny Alvarez On May 5, 2014, the New Haven school district held its annual spring concert and awards. The concert included the elementary school, middle school, and high school choirs.
The change from middle school to high school may seem scary to eighth graders getting ready to make the transition. After finally getting into the routine of switching classes, having a locker, and making it a habit of remembering to do homework on personal time, one may think it should seem like a breeze to transition into high school. However, the upcoming Freshmen for the 2015-2016 school year seem to think that what they fear about high school is about to become a reality.
On Thursday, March 19, the 7th and 8th grade girls’ volleyball teams played Four Rivers Conference opponents the Pacific Indians.
The 7th grade girls started off the night losing the first set to the Indians, 17-25. At the beginning of the second set, both McKenzie Overschmidt and Meagan Holtmeyer served numerous aces, resulting in Pacific having to call a timeout. With the score 9-6, the Shamrocks were on top. On Saturday March 14, New Haven’s 8th grade volleyball team played in the Owensville Tournament. There were eight teams in the tournament. The Shamrocks’ first game was against Washington. This was the third time this year the two teams have played each other.
The New Haven Middle School girls’ volleyball team hosted the Union Wildcats on Tuesday, March 3. The seventh grade team started the night off with a 5:30 game. The seventh grade girls were able to defeat the Wildcats in three sets.
On Friday, March 27, 2015, New Haven Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society inducted nine new members to their organization, which has been at New Haven Middle School for over twenty years.
Eighth grade art students Christian Patterson, Cecelia Malone, and Diane Ribera currently have their artwork on display in Principal Hoener's office. The students were inspired by the optical illusion art of Victor Vasarely. "The three works shown here are about as close to perfect as you can get," praises Mrs. Katie Borcherding, the art teacher. "The students spent hours creating their designs and shading. I'm really excited to have this group in high school. They are producing exceptional work at a young age and I know they'll be winning lots of art competitions in the next few years." Each year, the middle school students at New Haven Middle School compete against one another in a door decorating contest. There are four homeroom teachers at New Haven Middle School; therefore, there are four classes in the competition. Mr. Carey and Mrs. Smith are the two eighth grade sponsors, and Mr. Scheer and Mrs. Westermeyer are the two seventh grade sponsors.
On December 9th, 2014, the New Haven High School and Middle School Choir and Band held a Winter Concert. The concert started at 7:00 P.M. and ended at 8:00 P.M. Up first was the Middle School Choir, with Middle School Band following them. After they ended, High School Choir came up, and ending the concert was High School Band. Both Middle and High School Bands are directed by Mandy Koch, and both Middle and High School Choirs are directed by Katherine Taylor.
The seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams did not let low numbers affect their performances this season. Since the seventh grade team only had four girls, one of the eighth grade girls would take turns playing down. The eighth grade team had just enough girls to start a game; seventh graders would also see playing time during the eighth grade games. This left little room for injuries and illnesses. Fortunately, the team did not have to deal with that, for everyone remained healthy.
