Shamrocks Fall to Indians in Final Home Game

3/27/2015

On Thursday, March 19, the 7th and 8th grade girls’ volleyball teams played Four Rivers Conference opponents the Pacific Indians.

The 7th grade girls started off the night losing the first set to the Indians, 17-25. At the beginning of the second set, both McKenzie Overschmidt and Meagan Holtmeyer served numerous aces, resulting in Pacific having to call a timeout. With the score 9-6, the Shamrocks were on top.

After the timeout, Holtmeyer continued to serve, raising the lead 13-6. After losing the serve, Pacific came right back and added some points to their side of the board. This resulted in New Haven calling a timeout. The score was 13-10. With a service error by the Indians, New Haven got the ball back. Johnna Bloch helped out the Shamrocks by serving 3 aces. The Shamrocks also racked up some more points, until the score was 20-15. Later in the game, Kayla Brumels had a kill to add to the Shamrocks’ side, making the score 22-18. After  a serving error from Pacific, the Shamrocks took the second set 25-19. When asked about what strong suits helped the Shamrocks throughout the game, McKenzie Overschmidt said, “Attacking was definitely what helped us out tonight.”

In the beginning of the third set of play, the Shamrocks trailed the Indians 1-8. When the score reached 3-13, the Shamrocks called a timeout. After the timeout, New Haven got the ball back. Kayla Brumels gave the Shamrocks another kill, making the score 9-13. Server McKenzie Overschmidt had another ace, causing Pacific to call a timeout. The score was 10-13, and the Shamrocks were catching up. However, in the end, the 7th grade Shamrocks fell to the Indians 18-25.

To start off the final 8th grade home game, Makenzie Munsinger served 6 straight, making the score 6-0. The Shamrocks and Indians rallied back and forth, back and forth. Audrey Ford had a kill to help the Shamrocks out and make the score 9-4. Pacific retaliated, adding 5 more points to their side of the scoreboard. When the score reached 12-9, the Shamrocks took a timeout. When the Shamrocks got the ball back, Lydia Lagemann served an ace. After a service error from the Shamrocks, the rest of the game was a battle back and forth between the Shamrocks and the Indians. A tip-kill by Claire Meyer caused the score to be tied at 22 a piece. To end the first set, the Shamrocks came up short behind the Indians, 23-25.

In the second set, Munsinger had two aces. The back-and-forth battle was still occurring between the Shamrocks and Indians. In the end, the Pacific took control, winning the set 23-25.

Although the eighth grade Shamrocks had a tough loss against the Indians, eighth grader Claire Meyer was still positive about the experience.

She stated, “Honestly, although it’s our last home game as middle-schoolers, I don’t feel sad. I actually feel happy. I know there’s so much more to come in high school! That’s exciting and what takes over the sad feeling.”

The Shamrocks’ next game will be Monday, March 23 at 5:30 p.m. against the Bland Bears at Bland High School.
