The teams are close in score, and the time is ticking down. Shamrock fans are sitting all around the gym anxiously watching with excitement. Picture the players on the court. Picture the players on the bench. Now steer towards the coaches. Next to the players on the bench sits a man who has had an impact on the boys basketball program at New Haven High--he is the assistant coach, and his name is Derek Bailey. ![]() By Ereka Bailey Most of you all know that the principal at New Haven High School is Mr. Hoener, but how much do you actually know about him besides his name and the fact that he’s the principal? Josh Hoener grew up in the town of Owensville, Missouri. Later on, he started his first teaching job at Owensville High School where he taught math for six years. ![]() By LeeAnna Linton Wendy Oelrichs is an enthusiastic, energetic science teacher here at New Haven High School. Mrs. Oelrichs’s full name is Wendy Ann Scheer Oelrichs. She has two brothers: Charlie (35) and Allen (32), and has four nephews: Kyle (7), Evan (5), Sam (2), and Logan (2). She also has 2 kids: Ava who is 10 years old and is in the fifth grade, and Dane who is 8 years old and is in the third grade. She may be a science teacher, but Mrs. Oelrichs is also the adviser for the New Haven High School National Honor Society chapter. When asked why she decided to be the adviser for NHS, she said, “I wanted to be more involved with students at school outside of the classroom setting, so when the opportunity to sponsor National Honor Society presented itself, I jumped on it. It’s such an honor and a privilege to work with the “best of the best” at NHHS!” ![]() By Ereka Bailey We have an enthusiastic physical education teacher here at New Haven High. Mr. A. Peirick’s full name is Aaron Lawrence Peirick, and he has one brother named Austin Peirick who is three years younger than he is. He grew up in New Haven and went to high school here, graduating in 2008. He then went on to Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and he graduated in 2012. He enjoys playing golf, watching sports, taking naps, and listening to all kinds of music in his free time. Mr. Peirick talked about what made him want to teach physical education. “I loved PE when I was in school. I like playing different sports and I like teaching different sports. I also knew I wanted to coach high school basketball, which meant I needed to teach something.” ![]() By Krista Bennett Laura Strickland was born and raised in Saint Louis, MO. She grew up in North County where she went to private schools throughout high school. She has two older brothers who still live in the area, along with her parents. Mrs. Strickland is starting her second year of teaching here at New Haven. Before teaching here, she worked in the business world. Her last corporate job was for Precision Foods where she was a product manager for their retail line of food products. While in graduate school, she worked part-time at Target in Chesterfield. Mrs. Strickland is the business teacher at New Haven High School. She has always loved being involved with education, but becoming a teacher really wasn't on her radar at first. She loved marketing and the business world, but she was always drawn to education. As a product manager, she helped some high school students work on a project for their marketing class and that is when it clicked--she knew she wanted to teach.
Mrs. Melissa Schwab, long-time English teacher at NHHS, will not be returning next year. Her family is moving away from this area over the summer. She will soon begin earning her doctorate while working as a full time CrossFit coach. Mrs. Schwab is a cherished teacher at New Haven High, always willing to help students and bring on new ideas.
Mrs. Smith, the middle school social studies teacher at New Haven Middle School, gets all of her eighth grade students to write letters to themselves to read whenever they become seniors. Mrs. Smith first started doing this 18 years ago, her first year at New Haven. When asked why she does it, Mrs. Smith responded,”Eighth graders are on the verge of becoming young adults, and it’s interesting for them to see how they have changed as a person in a course of 4 years.”
Has it ever crossed your mind what your favorite NHHS teachers and coaches were like in high school? Were they popular or nerdy?! Did they enjoy Backstreet Boys or Bon Jovi? What were their interests and hobbies? Not all of the teaching staff went to NHHS originally, so where did they go to high school? Don’t worry students of NHHS, the answers are all right here!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like working at the same place as the person you love? Here at New Haven High School, we have the perfect example: Mr. and Mrs. Hoener.
My role model for school and art is Mr. Alan Bell. Alan Bell is a retired art teacher from Washington, Missouri. Mr. Bell was born on October 19,1941, in Hunterland, New York. He was a very active kid in high school, playing soccer and hunting, along with loving to fish. His number one thing to do as a kid was play soccer. He loved soccer so much that he played it in college, and after college, he became a soccer coach for little kids.
Rising up from the shavings on the concrete floor in wood shop, Mr. Aaron Peirick has taken his place as the new Physical Education teacher for New Haven High School.
Samantha Mae (Filla) Hausmann was born December 28, 1988, at St. Luke’s hospital in Chesterfield, Mo. She moved to New Haven in 2011 and absolutely loves it. When asked how it compared to Washington, she said, “It is quiet and friendly, and let's not forget the fact that there are no stoplights.”
Mrs. Hausmann started at New Haven in 2011 as the high school resource room teacher. The next year, after Mrs. Helling’s retirement, she became the English 1 teacher for freshmen and sophomores. She is also the freshman class sponsor, along with Mrs. Laune. When asked if she’d always wanted to be a teacher, she replied, “ I have always wanted to be a teacher. Although, there was a brief moment when I thought I should be an explosives engineer. It is probably for the better that I stuck with teaching.” Mrs. Hausmann attended St. Francis Borgia Regional High School and received her teaching degree from Missouri S&T. She is actually still in their pamphlet too! While in high school, she was on the dance team and involved in NHS. While at Missouri S&T, she was involved in SMSTA, Sigma Tau Delta (English Honors Society), Phi Kappa Phi (Honors Society), and was an office of admissions secretary. When Mrs. Hausmann isn’t at school, she finds enjoyment in reading, camping and fishing! Last December, she and her husband, Robbie, welcomed their first born child into the world. Baby Charlie was born on December 25, 2013, making him a Christmas baby! She remarked,“Everything about life has changed after having Charlie, specifically the lack of sleep and the extra gray hairs I've earned, but I wouldn't change it for the world.” On behalf of New Haven High, thank you Mrs. Hausmann for all your hard work and dedication. As college graduate, teacher’s aid, and an assistant volleyball coach, she is a newbie, but she’s already taking on responsibility. Ashleigh Bailey is a new teacher aid in our school. She is working in the Special Education room with Ms. Allen. Ms. Bailey was interviewed and revealed a little bit more about her life before she came back to New Haven to teach. Ms. Bailey went to high school here at New Haven, was on the varsity volleyball team that went to state in 2005, and graduated in 2007. As soon as she got her college degrees, she came right back! Ms. Bailey was asked how much has changed since she went to school here. “Not much has changed, what are there four new teachers? The chromebooks are new. When I walk down the halls, I see a lot of similarities,” she said.
The next question that was asked is where she went to college and what her degrees are in. Ms. Bailey replied, “I went to East Central, and I got my degrees in general education and in skin therapy.” Many of the teachers come back to New Haven to teach, and so did she. When she was asked why, she answered, “I’ve always wanted to come back to New Haven because when you go to school here, you have a bond that makes you want to come back, and I’ve always wanted to help coach volleyball. It just worked out.” “I look forward to learning new things. Everyday is different, which pushes me out of my comfort zone to make me work even more.” Bailey is not doing all of her work without help. “Ms. Allen has been very helpful by easing obstacles that I will encounter. She has been very calm and informative about my new position.” Volleyball is another way she is a part of this school. She was asked if she liked coaching and if she remembers the feeling of winning state.“Yes, I absolutely enjoy volunteering! I do it for the tradition of New Haven and for my love of volleyball. The girls this year have a chance to do something great, and I am happy to be a part of it.” When asked about the feeling of winning state, she said, “The feeling is indescribable. It’s something we worked so hard for and we accomplished it. Winning state was something we worked toward our whole lives.” As the new school year is beginning, Ms. Bailey is able to share her love of volleyball by coaching and her love of New Haven by being back in the halls where she spent her high school years. -by Abby Perdue Madeleine Allen is a new teacher in our school, and she works in the Special Education room.Ms.Allen attended NHHS, where she was involved in both Track and Cross Country. She was also in many clubs, including FBLA, FCCLA, Spanish Club, NHS, and Student Council.
As a child, Ms. Allen always wanted to be a teacher. She mentioned, “I always had other teachers influencing me to continue my dream of becoming a teacher.” Ms.Allen said Mrs. Hoener, and Mr.Tucker were always there to encourage her to accomplish the dream of teaching. However, being a high school special education teacher was not her first idea. Originally, Ms.Allen wanted to be a elementary teacher for grades first through sixth. Ms.Allen attended ECC for three-and-a-half years. While there, she received her Associates of Arts in teaching. For 2 years, she attended CMU, in Union, Missouri, and received her Bachelor of Science in Education. In the future, Ms.Allen plans on staying in the education field, teaching students, and helping them with their daily problems. -by Zoie Mathis So many changes are occurring at New Haven High School this year: chromebooks, air conditioning, even new teachers! The additions to our staff include Ms. Bailey, Ms. Allen, Mrs. Strickland, and our new Industrial Arts teacher, Mr. Gortney.
Background Mr. Caleb Gortney is a 2008 graduate of Union High School. While in high school, he played baseball and football and enjoyed woodworking. When asked to compare the difference between where he went to school and where he teaches, Mr. Gortney stated, “There is so much more technology now than back when I was in school. Mr. Gortney also went on to mention that in his ‘08 graduating class there were approximately 170 students. That’s more than our whole school! Mr. Gortney is a 2013 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His advice for seniors after high school is, “Go to college. Go into a field you love and enjoy; if you do that, you will never work a day in your life.” On the other spectrum of things, his advice for incoming freshmen: “Work hard, and pay attention!” Fun Facts about Mr. Gortney Mr. Gortney’s favorite class to teach is woodworking. His favorite movie is The Shawshank Redemption. The celebrity crush of Mr. Gortney is Jessica Alba. Conclusion All in all, the Industrial Arts department’s newest addition is not only a teacher inspired by his own high school teachers, but he also plans to inspire students through hard work and good influence. In the end, Mr. Gortney is a fresh face in New Haven, one of our many changes. --by Lauren Bergner Welcome back Mrs. Miller! Mrs. Miller is the Family Consumer Science teacher at New Haven High School and is beginning her third year of teaching. When asked how she felt about coming back to school, she responded, “I am excited to come back to school next week and looking forward to having AC in my classroom soon!”
AC in the classroom is not the only change in Mrs. Miller’s life. On July 2, 2014, the Miller family grew from three to four! Miss Kelsey Ann was born at 1:42 p.m. She weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. When asked about how the baby received her name, Mrs. Miller replied, “We decided on Kelsey because I wanted a name to go with her older sister, Lindsey, and I liked how both names ended in sey. Her middle name is Ann after her Grandma Judy.” Big sister Lindsey, now two years old, enjoys helping feed, burp, and bathe her new baby sister, who she calls “Kel-pey.” If Mrs. Miller isn’t busy feeding baby Kelsey, she takes joy in playing dolls with Lindsey. Now that the family has grown, getting out of the house takes a little longer, and there is extra packing to be done. A big thanks to Mrs.Steinhoff, the previous Family Consumer Science teacher, for subbing the last two weeks! Mrs.Miller returned to class Tuesday September 2, after Labor Day weekend. -by Molly Munsinger |
