Wendy Oelrichs is an enthusiastic, energetic science teacher here at New Haven High School. Mrs. Oelrichs’s full name is Wendy Ann Scheer Oelrichs. She has two brothers: Charlie (35) and Allen (32), and has four nephews: Kyle (7), Evan (5), Sam (2), and Logan (2). She also has 2 kids: Ava who is 10 years old and is in the fifth grade, and Dane who is 8 years old and is in the third grade.
She may be a science teacher, but Mrs. Oelrichs is also the adviser for the New Haven High School National Honor Society chapter. When asked why she decided to be the adviser for NHS, she said, “I wanted to be more involved with students at school outside of the classroom setting, so when the opportunity to sponsor National Honor Society presented itself, I jumped on it. It’s such an honor and a privilege to work with the “best of the best” at NHHS!”
In her free time, Mrs. Oelrichs loves to exercise! She enjoys walking, running, yoga, and of course Crossfit. When asked why she wanted to work at NHHS, she stated, “New Haven is my hometown, so most of my family members live in this area. I also prefer living in a small town like New Haven versus a city or larger town. I’m also an alumnus of NHHS, so I was familiar with the school and the staff. When I first considered working here, I noticed that many of the teachers were teachers I had in school, and many of the others were NHHS graduates. I knew if teachers stayed that long, or if they chose to come back to teach here after graduating, that NHHS must be a great place to work!”
Her favorite things about New Haven are how close knit the community is, how much the community supports the school, and how if someone needs help, the entire town rallies behind them. Mrs. Oelrichs pronounced that there was not one certain life event or person that inspired her to become a science teacher, but her old teachers throughout school inspired her to do something that would make a difference.
When asked what some of her pet peeves are, she exclaimed, “I hate the feeling of chalk! But my biggest pet peeve is hearing the phrase ‘I can’t’ from one of my students. I believe in ALL of my students, and I genuinely feel that they all have the ability to achieve greatness, as long as they are willing to put in the work.”
If that wasn’t enough information about Mrs. Oelrichs for you, here are a few of her favorite things. Her favorite TV shows are Lost and Big Bang Theory, favorite song is “Defying Gravity” from Wicked ever since she saw it with the seniors last year in New York City, favorite movie is Forrest Gump, and favorite foods are dark chocolate and in-season peaches.
On behalf of New Haven High, thank you Mrs. Oelrichs for helping New Haven become a Blue Ribbon School and for keeping the tradition of excellence on track.
