The day commemorates the sacrifices of the federal, state, county and municipal peace officers who have been killed or disabled in the performance of their duties. “The names of more than 670 Missouri law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty are on the Law Enforcement Memorial in Jefferson City, a vivid reminder of how those brave men and women have always placed themselves in harm’s way on our behalf,” Gov. Nixon said. “The lowered flags on Sunday will pay honor to their courage, and represent the gratitude and respect of Missourians.” JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages motorists to give turtles crossing roads a brake. Turtles are struck by cars throughout warmer months, but are at special risk this time of year because they are on the move. Young males make up most of the travelers as they search for territories of their own and for female turtles. Comfort is also a factor. Like other reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded so basking on warm asphalt feels good on cool spring days.
