Community Welcomes First Lady Georganne Nixon

“There is a perception that bigger means better, and we thought it was important to come and highlight what is going on here,” says First Lady of Missouri Georganne Nixon, addressing the students and faculty of New Haven High. “I don’t think this kind of success is a fluke.”


Mrs. Nixon visited New Haven High School on Thursday, October 8, to recognize the school district for winning the acclaimed National Blue Ribbon Award. She visited two classrooms and held a student panel, where she questioned a select group of high achieving students about the success of NHHS.

NHHS Only Public High School in MO to Receive Blue Ribbon Award

“Once you learn how to win, you keep on winning.”



This statement, made by New Haven School District Superintendent Mr. Kyle Kruse in explanation of NHHS’s longtime “tradition of excellence,” seems to be spot-on.


On September 29th, NHHS was publicly awarded the National Blue Ribbon Award and is now recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. This award, established by the U.S. Secretary of Education, is given to 335 schools in the country each year.


New Haven High School, a first time recipient, is the only public high school in Missouri to receive the National Blue Ribbon Award for the year 2015.

Chemistry Cooks Cookies

On May 12th, Mrs. Wendy Oelrichs’ second and fourth hour Chemistry 1 classes baked cookies as part of a lab. The purpose of the lab was to study Stoichiometric chemistry, namely about how ingredients come together to make a certain amount of something. Mrs. Oelrichs took this opportunity to have some fun with a lab, as well as show this process in action.

Business Tech Kicks Hunger to the Curb

On May 19th, the last day of school for New Haven High, the Business Tech students will be holding a kickball tournament to raise money for the Memorial Baptist Church’s Buddy bag program. Buddy Bags are bags of food for children in New Haven who may struggle with hunger. These bags are distributed to the children at school. The question is, how will the church raise money to provide food for these bags? The Business Tech class plans on helping raise money by running the kickball tournament.

NHHS Students Enter FRC Annual Art Show

The annual Four Rivers Conference Art Show was open from April 3rd to April 17th at East Central College in Union. New Haven High School art and photography (TV Video, Publications) classes submitted pieces of art including photographs, paintings, sculptures, prints, and other drawings drawn with a variety of different media. Schools in the Four Rivers conference competed in the show. A reception was held April 17th to celebrate all the art in the show.

School Evacuated Due to Mechanical Issues

On Wednesday, March 18, the New Haven High School/ Middle School fire alarms went off, alerting everyone in the building. What people thought was a prank or just an accidental hit ended up to be a smoke in the vents. Kate Weiser, a sophomore at New Haven High, joked, “My first thought was should I take my cake or nah?” Kate later stated, “I felt safe and knew that whoever was in charge would make a good decision.”

On Friday, March 18th, the Spanish 2 class celebrated a late Mardi Gras. The fiesta, or party, had been rescheduled due to a school evacuation, which caused the original party’s class period to be shortened to about twenty-five minutes.

Custom Culture Contest in New Haven

Vans shoe company has been holding a custom culture contest each year from April 10 to May 12.  This year, New Haven High School students have the opportunity to work with the shoe brand in this national competition. The purpose of the competition is for the Vans company to receive new and original styles from students. According to the vans.com website, “Custom Culture was created to inspire and empower high school students to embrace their creativity through art and design, and bring attention to diminishing arts education budgets.”

New Resources at NHHS

This year, a big change was made at New Haven High School. At the beginning of the school year, each student in grades 9-12 received a chromebook

The exact definition of a chromebook is a laptop running Chrome OS as its operating system. However, students at New Haven High School often just call them laptops.

Chromebooks for each student was a pretty big change for the school. Last year, there were two carts of chromebooks to be shared by the entire school; however, they were used mainly in the English classes.

Hunger Ends NOW

For the past month, the New Haven High School business tech class has been thinking of different ways to raise money and/or food for an organization of their choice. Mrs. Strickland, the Business Tech teacher at New Haven High, brought a program called Lead2Feed to the students’ attention. Mrs. Strickland explained, “It is a team-based, service project program that is designed to help fight hunger. Students learn leadership skills along with teamwork and take almost complete ownership of the program.” This program was developed by David Novak, the CEO of Yum Brand!, which owns Taco Bell and KFC. This program allows students to make their own logo, organization name, and a mascot.

A “Cool” and “Bad” Trip

On January 30, 2015, the NHHS TV Video class went on a field trip to St Louis. They left at 8:20 and arrived back in New Haven around 2:30. This trip was both fun and educational for the students that participated.
