Flags at Government Buildings in Missouri to be at Half-Staff on May 15 for Peace Officers Memorial Day

5/11/2016

Picture
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The flags of the United States and the State of Missouri at all government buildings in Missouri will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday (May 15) in honor of Missouri’s Peace Officers Memorial Day, so designated by a 1996 state law. The day commemorates the sacrifices of the federal, state, county and municipal peace officers who have been killed or disabled in the performance of their duties.

“The names of more than 670 Missouri law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty are on the Law Enforcement Memorial in Jefferson City, a vivid reminder of how those brave men and women have always placed themselves in harm’s way on our behalf,” Gov. Nixon said. “The lowered flags on Sunday will pay honor to their courage, and represent the gratitude and respect of Missourians.”

MDC Encourages Motorists to Give Turtles a Brake!

5/11/2016

Picture
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages motorists to give turtles crossing roads a brake. Turtles are struck by cars throughout warmer months, but are at special risk this time of year because they are on the move. Young males make up most of the travelers as they search for territories of their own and for female turtles. Comfort is also a factor. Like other reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded so basking on warm asphalt feels good on cool spring days.

1904 New Haven World’s Prom

5/10/2016

Picture
By Emily Lewis
Everyone knows what prom is but do you know how it first came about?

The word prom is short for promenade: the formal, introductory parading of guests at a party. At the high school level, proms were a regular event by the early 1900s. These turn-of-the-century proms were generally simple affairs where youth came only to dine together in their Sunday best. However, by the 1920s and 1930s, dancing had also become an essential element of the prom. Rather than a simple gathering, prom became an annual class banquet where students met with each other and danced afterward.
