Teacher Spotlight: Caleb Gortney

9/8/2014

So many changes are occurring at New Haven High School this year: chromebooks, air conditioning, even new teachers! The additions to our staff include Ms. Bailey, Ms. Allen, Mrs. Strickland, and our new Industrial Arts teacher, Mr. Gortney.

Background
Mr. Caleb Gortney is a 2008 graduate of Union High School. While in high school, he played baseball and football and enjoyed woodworking. When asked to compare the difference between where he went to school and where he teaches, Mr. Gortney stated, “There is so much more technology now than back when I was in school. Mr. Gortney also went on to mention that in his ‘08 graduating class there were approximately 170 students. That’s more than our whole school!
Mr. Gortney is a 2013 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His advice for seniors after high school is, “Go to college. Go into a field you love and enjoy; if you do that, you will never work a day in your life.” On the other spectrum of things, his advice for incoming freshmen: “Work hard, and pay attention!”

Fun Facts about Mr. Gortney
Mr. Gortney’s favorite class to teach is woodworking. His favorite movie is The Shawshank Redemption. The celebrity crush of Mr. Gortney is Jessica Alba.

Conclusion
All in all, the Industrial Arts department’s newest addition is not only a teacher inspired by his own high school teachers, but he also plans to inspire students through hard work and good influence. In the end, Mr. Gortney is a fresh face in New Haven, one of our many changes. --by Lauren Bergner
