Each year, the middle school students at New Haven Middle School compete against one another in a door decorating contest. There are four homeroom teachers at New Haven Middle School; therefore, there are four classes in the competition. Mr. Carey and Mrs. Smith are the two eighth grade sponsors, and Mr. Scheer and Mrs. Westermeyer are the two seventh grade sponsors.
This year’s theme for decorating was “sports.” The doors consisted of snowmen made of balls, elves playing basketball, the Winter Olympics,and Frosty The Sports Man.The students brought in supplies and ideas to help them create the best doors possible. This year’s winner was Mrs. Smith’s “Basketball Game.” The door was made up of elves playing against reindeer while Santa and Jack Frost were their coaches. When discussing ideas of how to go about creating the award-winning door, students in Mrs. Smith’s eighth grade class jotted down ideas on the board. Makenzie Munsinger stated, “I contributed the idea of doing a basketball theme, since it’s basketball season.”
As reward for having the best-decorated door, Mrs. Smith’s class was treated to a pizza party, provided by both National Junior Honor Society and Student Council. On the last day before break, the students who won were given a variety of pizza choices for lunch. “The pizza was a great idea and very yummy!” remarked eighth grader Andi Wideman.
Door decorating has been going on in the middle school for about ten years. Students enjoy getting out of class for half the day to work with their classmates on creating the most spectacular door possible, in hope of winning a pizza party. “Next year I will definitely miss the door decorating,” said eighth grader Claire Meyer. Though she was not in the winning class, she still enjoyed participating in the contest.
