The New Haven JV boys basketball team won consolation against Union in the last tournament. New Haven’s first game was against Pacific. Pacific defeated New Haven, 47- 32. New Haven’s second game was against Hermann. New Haven won the game 50-38. Players recite what Coach Viehland often says, "Anytime you win two games in a tournament and finish on a two game winning comeback, it’s a good tournament. ” Player Martin Lewis reported, “Man, did it feel good to finish on a winning streak after bouncing back to a tough loss to Pacific.” When asked about their expectations for the rest of the season, most players said they put in the hard work everyday to improve. Even though they work everyday, they still find the time to have fun. Good luck to the boys for the rest of their season! By Nate Offard
Last Friday, during third and fourth hour, seniors at New Haven High decorated the senior hallway, the cafeteria, and their lockers in the spirit of the Christmas season. The senior hallway is now very cleverly decorated, displaying a large variety of Christmas lights, trees, wrapping papers, and miscellaneous decorations. The cafeteria was decorated with long strings of Christmas lights, as well as a large Christmas tree. Despite the differences in decorations between each of the senior lockers, the seniors pulled together and made it eminently clear that there is plenty of Christmas spirit at New Haven High School. On December 17th, the New Haven Middle School choir and band will perform alongside the New Haven High School choir and band for the Christmas concert. The middle school band will perform “The Christmas Machine," “Silver Bells,” and “Winter Medley.” The middle school choir will perform the songs “Twelve Carols of Christmas,” “Winter Troika,” and “Believe.” The high school choir will perform the songs “Silent Night,” “Falalalala,” and “In Winter.” The high school band will perform the songs “T’was the Parade Before Christmas,” which is included due to the fact that the NHHS Marching Band was unable to perform in the Holiday Parade of Lights in Washington, MO on December 5th as originally planned due to scheduling conflicts. The other songs the band will perform are “A Christmas ‘Pop’ Sing-Along,” which includes popular Christmas songs, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time,” and “The Three Kings.” Come out to the High School gym this Thursday to support the music students of New Haven and to get into the Christmas spirit! By Lauren Bergner It’s that time of year again! The time of lights, reindeer, and holiday cheer! Christmas is back in town, and along with Christmas comes holiday traditions. Let’s see what the students of New Haven High have in store for their holiday seasons! Freshman Kamryn Poe says her family’s favorite part about Christmas is spending time with one another. “Every year, my family and I, on Christmas Eve, hang up ornaments we’ve made throughout the years. After that, we have a bake off,” she adds. “During Christmas everyone in my family gets together to sing Christmas carols and the little kids meet Santa. We enjoy yummy food and open presents from each member. All of my aunts, uncles, and cousins attend. In a small house filled with about 60 family members, we enjoy the holiday!” exclaims freshman Makenzie Munsinger. SCAM ALERT: If someone calls from Microsoft and says your computer has a serious virus, DO NOT GIVE THEM REMOTE ACCESS!! Once inside, they can obtain all your account information, passwords, and credit card numbers if you order things from the internet. Microsoft, Dell, HP, or any other company will not be calling you about your computer. Don't give information over the phone, and don't allow anyone you don't know to have access.
One local person called had to explain she doesn't OWN a computer! They are making random calls in hopes of getting someone to let them have access. Don't do it! By Ereka Bailey and Taylor Gillespie On November 3rd, the Chamber of Commerce in New Haven met at noon upstairs in T&T Bar. Steve Roth began the meeting with a call to order. After the call to order, Angie Scheer then gave the Secretary report and received a motion to approve. Following the Secretary report, Debbie Winters called for the Treasure reports and happily received a motion to approve her call. Since there were no Presidentials to report, the Treasure report was the last report that is given. The first thing Steve Roth spoke about was the Fire Fest food booths. The food booths were open from 3:00 pm until they sold out. Mr. Roth and his wife helped run and serve the food. The Visitor Center was open from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm during Fire Fest. They sold souvenirs for visitors and the local community as keepsakes. No decision has been made regarding a rescheduled date for the Adopt a Highway, yet. Thanks to Reays, the Business After Hours event had a great turn out! A special thank you goes out to the New Haven Girls Varsity Basketball team! The girls baked cookies and other sweet treats to raffle off at home games on Monday, December 7th, and Tuesday, December 8th. All money raised from the raffle was donated to the local Backpack Program, a program that helps send food home with less fortunate children in the community of New Haven so that these children have food to eat during weekends. In all, the girls varsity basketball team raised $175 for the cause. Thanks Shamrocks for helping out the community this holiday season!

By Clare Roth Since I started kindergarten in 2003, a lot has changed in the New Haven School District. Both the elementary and high schools have acquired new principals. In 2010, we got a new gym floor. Since I started high school in 2012, we have gone 1 to 1 with chromebooks and we have installed a new track. Many teachers have come and many have gone. Not a lot has stayed constant. Each year has been a little different, but one thing has always stayed the same: Randy Nadler. Famous globetrotter Randy Nadler visited New Haven High School on November 30, 2015 for his annual cultural presentation. Although Nadler did not go on a trip this past summer, he gave a presentation on a previous trip he’d taken to Italy. To many, Nadler has the dream job. Each school year, Nadler visits schools throughout Missouri to give cultural presentations on the places he travels to during the summer. Nadler is a backpacker, often staying in small tents instead of hotels. He has been all over the world, from the Pyramids in Egypt to the Great Wall of China. JV/V Girls:

The third annual Hunger Games event at New Haven High School was quite successful. Shamrock students were humored by the food challenges that occurred during the week of November 16th, and this event was popular with students and teachers alike. Students paid $1 to nominate a student or $2 to nominate teachers for the challenges each day. Proceeds went to the local buddy bags program. On Monday, nominees students ate donuts off a string, and on Tuesday, students attempted to eat a cookie balanced on their faces. In both of these challenges, contestants were not allowed to use their hands for assistance. On Wednesday, competitors bobbed for apples, and on Thursday, the participants ate pureed burritos or pizza, depending on the lunch shift. On Friday, contestants participated in a saltine challenge to see who could eat the most saltine crackers within a minute. The winners on each day (first lunch to second lunch) were Andrew Menke and Cameron Pritchett on Monday, Will Soete and Devin Buchheit on Tuesday, Jon Stone and Alex Majors on Wednesday, Bobby Pruessner and Lucy Roth on Thursday, and Jared Horstmann and Ms. Kelly were the winners on Friday. The first varsity boys' basketball game of the season was played against the Belle tigers on November 24. Though the Shamrocks fought hard, they couldn’t take the Tigers down. At the end of the first quarter, it was all tied up between the two teams at eight points with Will Soete for the Shamrocks scoring four of the eight. Also in the first quarter, senior Zach Boehmer twisted his ankle when he came down from trying to rebound a ball. Boehmer came out of the game, and then returned later in the fourth quarter, but he was still not at 100%. In the second quarter, the Shamrocks fought hard, but couldn’t quite stay up to speed with Belle. The first half ended with the scores of 19 by Belle and 15 from New Haven. The third quarter was just about the same, ending with Belle at 29 and New Haven at 23. By Emily Lewis
The week before Thanksgiving break, New Haven High School had their 10th annual Leadership Week. Student Council hosts the annual event to raise money for a local charity. This year they chose to donate the proceeds to low-income families in our community to help pay for their utility bills this winter. $400 was raised throughout the course of the week. Student Council President, Lauren Bergner, explains the background of Leadership Week. “The purpose of Leadership Week is to join groups of people together who normally don't associate with one another and to use teamwork to overcome the many challenges we throw at them over the course of the week.” The week consisted of Penny Wars, tug-of-war, trivia, an obstacle course challenge, and warm fuzzies. |
