The day was Saturday, March 21st... what was happening? Well, it was time for the 2015 conference scholar bowl tournament.
The tournament was held at Hermann High School and run by the Hermann High scholar bowl coach with the help of volunteers from each competing school. Six of the eight conference schools were in attendance (St. Clair, St. James, Sullivan, New Haven, Hermann, Owensville). This year’s T-shirt week, organized by the Student Council, was held March 23rd through March 27th at NHHS. This event was another chance for each class to earn spirit points for the pizza and ice cream party at the end of the year. Each day had a different t-shirt theme, and students were to come dressed accordingly.
Fears. Everyone has them. They can range from being scared of heights, snakes, drowning, or even being scared of clowns. According to Dictionary.com, fear, “is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.” When people are scared of something, they usually have a reason. The reason can be just because what they fear is just creepy, or there might be deeper reason for their fear.
On Friday, March 27th, the New Haven High School band headed to East Central College for the District Band Festival. New Haven hadn’t been to districts for many years, and this was their chance to show that their concert band is just as strong as their marching band. Individuals and ensembles also had the opportunity to perform the next day.
The change from middle school to high school may seem scary to eighth graders getting ready to make the transition. After finally getting into the routine of switching classes, having a locker, and making it a habit of remembering to do homework on personal time, one may think it should seem like a breeze to transition into high school. However, the upcoming Freshmen for the 2015-2016 school year seem to think that what they fear about high school is about to become a reality.
On Wednesday, March 18, the New Haven High School/ Middle School fire alarms went off, alerting everyone in the building. What people thought was a prank or just an accidental hit ended up to be a smoke in the vents. Kate Weiser, a sophomore at New Haven High, joked, “My first thought was should I take my cake or nah?” Kate later stated, “I felt safe and knew that whoever was in charge would make a good decision.”
Prom is one of the events that most high schoolers look forward to, and in more recent years, something expected along with prom is the prom proposals, or “promposals.” Promposals are elaborate or cute ways of asking someone to prom. This isn’t exclusive to guys only; girls have also promposed to their boyfriends.
This season, the New Haven Shamrocks’ Track Team has the most students it has ever had going out for the team. Head Coach John Tucker, along with his coaching staff--Mr. Josh Hoener, throwing coach; Mr. Mike Hagedorn, jumping coach; and Mr. Aaron Peirick, assistant running coach--have a total of 48 athletes, 28 girls and 20 boys.
Do you remember that one movie your parents or older siblings used to watch all the time? For some reason, it has just always stuck with you? It’s movies like those that seem to stay classics throughout time and are never actually forgotten. Whether it’s for a laugh or hits the viewer deep with emotional feelings, these movies are labeled “the best” in someone's opinion.
On Friday, March 18th, the Spanish 2 class celebrated a late Mardi Gras. The fiesta, or party, had been rescheduled due to a school evacuation, which caused the original party’s class period to be shortened to about twenty-five minutes.
