The 28th annual New Haven Round-Robin volleyball tournament was held on Saturday, September 19th. New Haven, Winfield, Bowling Green, and Belle were the teams competing in this year’s tournament. New Haven played at 9 am against Belle, at 12 pm against Winfield, and at 2 pm against Bowling Green.
The Shamrocks came out strong in the first game against Belle, winning in two sets, 25-9, 25-14. In this game, libero Kim Hoffmann had 5 aces, and outside hitter Emma Borcherding had 8 kills.
The Shamrock’s third game was against the Bowling Green Bobcats. In their third match, the Shamrocks yet again came out on top, winning 25-11, 25-8.
From pool play, the Shamrocks were seeded #1, putting them in the championship match. Winfield, ranked #2, also earned their spot in the championship match. The Round-Robin rivalry was happening yet again for the third straight year, but who would come out on top?
The championship match between the Shamrocks and Warriors was one for the books. Back and forth, the momentum shifted between the two teams. In the first set, the Shamrocks topped the Warriors, 25-22. As expected, the Warriors came back with a fight. The second set was almost an exact replica of the first set. Spurs of momentum ping-ponged from one side of the court to the other, ultimately creating a very intense game. In the end, the Shamrocks broke the Warriors’ Round-Robin winning streak and won the second set and the tournament, 25-23.
Emma Engelbrecht said, “The first 20 points in each set were a difficult task, but after that we played even harder and finished it off.”
When asked about how she felt after winning the New Haven Round-Robin tournament, senior Lauren Bergner stated, “It’s really exciting bringing the 1st place title back to our home court! The whole day our team worked hard, and never gave up. We set a goal and we completed it. Now we just have to be prepared for this week’s Hermann tournament.”
