Over the weekend, New Haven hosted their annual Softball Classic, in which eight teams participated. New Haven played Calvary Lutheran, Hancock, and Hermann.
The first game was against Calvary Lutheran at Lion’s Field. The end score was 5-1 in Calvary Lutheran’s favor. Coach Scheer stated that the girls had great defense, but still need to approve on batting. The only run was scored by starting pitcher Emily Scheer by a home run error play on Calvary. Due to the loss, the Shamrocks were 0-1 in the tournament, heading towards their second game.
The second game was against Hancock at Bock Field. The end score was 16-0 in New Haven’s favor. This was New Haven’s first win of the season. The game ended with Mercy Rule in the second inning. Emily Scheer was one pitch away from pitching a perfect game. The Shamrocks went up through their line three times in the first inning. A highlight of the game was Scheer hit a triple and ran in three RBIs. Due to the win, the Shamrocks were 1-1 in the tournament, heading towards playing for Consolation.
The third game was against Hermann at Bock Field. The end score was 10-0 in Hermann’s favor. The game ended with Mercy Rule in the fifth inning. Third Baseman Alison Long stated,”Hermann has a great defensive lineup, and knows how to hit the ball very well.” Due to the loss, the Shamrocks were 1-2 at the end of the tournament, and lost Consolation.
Even though the Shamrocks may not have won the tournament, they did gain their first win of their season. They played teams they usually never play outside of tournaments, so that in itself was a good learning experience.
Congratulations to the New Haven Softball team and good luck on your last few weeks of your regular season and good luck at Districts in the beginning of October!
