On Tuesday, May 8th, the Spring band concert took place at New Haven High School. Grades 5-12 played 3-4 songs and received several different medals. The elementary grades could win awards for “Most Valuable Player”, “Most Improved Section”, and “Most Valuable Section”. The high school students were recognized for their performance in marching band, pep band, district, conference, state band, and the students who lettered.
After the high school band performed 2 songs, the seniors had a chance to say a few words to sum up their accomplishments and memories throughout the 8 years of band. This was also the time Mrs. Koch announced the winners of the Carol Bounds Music Boosters scholarship, Michelle Bahena, and the John Philip Sousa award, Liz Hughes.
After each grade performed their own songs, all of the grades combined to play a “master blaster” song. Mrs. Koch stated, “I think it's good to get the younger kids to sit and play next to the older kids for experience. It is also cool to hear how big of a sound we get when we all play together.”
Overall, Mrs. Koch commented, “I thought it was maybe one of our strongest concerts, maybe the best we've ever given, since I’ve been here. All the grades did very well. They all exceeded my expectations for the year.”
Senior Michelle Bahena reflected, “It was really memorable, especially with the touch Liz’s speech gave. I was super excited to have been awarded the Carol Bounds Music Booster scholarship because ever since I was younger I admired the seniors that were awarded it. I was also proud of Liz for being awarded the John Philip Sousa award.”
Claire Meyer, junior, commented, “Overall I thought it was good. It was cool to hear the progression of the grades throughout the years. It'll be very weird without the seniors next year because we've been playing with them for a while now.”
Congratulations to Mrs. Koch and all of the band students for another successful year!
