On Sunday, April 3rd, 2016, New Haven High School put on a celebration to honor their receiving the National Blue Ribbon award. The National Blue Ribbon Award recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. New Haven High School received this award in September 2015.
Following the parade, a ceremony was held in the New Haven High School gymnasium. To start off the ceremony, Principal Josh Hoener gave a presentation to explain what the National Blue Ribbon Award is, why it is significant, what the application process entails.
Following principal Hoener were several other speakers that included Representative Justin Alferman, Emma Jo Eichelberger, Seth Schenck, Chris Kase, Brenda Menke, and Melissa Schwab. In between speakers, short alumni videos made by current NHHS students were shown, as well as a comical video made by the teachers, administrators, and staff of NHHS.
Regarding the speakers, Blue Ribbon committee member and high school teacher, Wendy Oelrichs, states, “I was really impressed with all of the speakers and their speeches. It was amazing to see everyone come together in celebration for this award.”
Emma Jo Eichelberger adds, “As I gave my speech, I felt nervous to be in front of the community and my peers, but this town is so supportive that my nervousness was over shined by my joy for being chosen to speak at the Blue Ribbon Celebration.”
She continued saying,”The Blue Ribbon award, to me, means that our amazing school district and community are finally being noticed for all the excellence we have continually achieved.”
Former English teacher, Melissa Schwab said, “Being back at school was awesome. It felt like I never left. Everyone was so welcoming, and I especially enjoyed seeing the staff and seniors. I was sincerely honored to be asked to speak. I don't really get nervous because I enjoy speaking, but as the other speeches went on, I started to worry because they were so good and covered a lot of what I had planned. I had fun using grammar in my speech and just getting a chance to impact students again. I can't wait to come back out for graduation!”
The ceremony and celebration was ended with the singing of New Haven High School’s alma mater. Refreshments were served after.
All in all, the National Blue Ribbon celebration was an exciting event for not only the students and staff of New Haven High School, but also everyone in the community.
Congratulations New Haven High School on this prestigious achievement!
