Thursday, February 19th, the New Haven Shamrocks headed to St. Clair, home of the Bulldogs, for their final Four Rivers Conference and regular season match of the year. All four of New Haven’s teams were scheduled to play, due to harsh weather conditions predicted the following night. The Varsity girls played at first at the high school, with the Varsity boys directly after them. At the junior high, the JV boys played first, followed by the JV girls.
First off, they have to leave behind a team they have played with for the past four years, the ones they have bonded with and made friends with. The one thing most seniors will miss about playing for the Shamrocks was the people they played with. Senior Carlie Steinbeck says, “I have made so many memories with my team, and that has to be the hardest thing to leave behind this year.”
Secondly, for some, this is their last year to play for a competitive team; although some will move on to play at the college level, most will not. “It’s hard to leave behind something you have been passionate about since kindergarden,” says Cortanie Gale. Senior night is just a small reminder of how much athletes meant to their coaches, teammates, school, and community. The point of senior night is to acknowledge all the seniors’ hard work throughout the years at New Haven. Whether they’ve played on the team or helped with managing, they have made an impact on their team, and they get rewarded for that. “It’s really cool to watch how many people come together to plan this night for the seniors,” says senior mom Leslie Steinbeck. Before the Jv game was over, all the seniors met in a classroom to talk, eat Subway, and enjoy some cake. With the parents’ help, the food was good, and everyone was in a great mood! There were laughter, jokes, memories shared, and even a few tears from the moms. Once the JV game was over, the seniors lined up with their parents and waited to hear their named to be called to walk down the court. Moms were holding back tears while everyone else waited anxiously to get to their names. Cindy Borcherding took pictures as each senior approached center court. The seniors were all given flowers to hand to their moms after the ceremony. Once pictures were completed, some seniors shared hugs and tears, while others took pictures and waited for the Varsity boys’ game to begin. It was a special night to remember for the 2015 seniors of NNHS. -by Cortanie Gale As the New Haven girls’ basketball season comes to an end, this year’s team graduates eight senior girls. Each of the eight girls has been a four-year member of the basketball team. For four years these eight ladies have put in hours of hard work and dedication. Each member of the team was asked to share a favorite memory...

Thursday night at New Haven High marked a bittersweet moment for eight ladies of the New Haven varsity basketball team. As the eight seniors suited up for the game that would be their last time playing a basketball game on the Ray Steinhoff Court, New Haven took on the Sullivan Eagles for the last home game of the season.
The New Haven Shamrocks’ JV and Varsity boys’ basketball teams took on the Owensville Dutchmen at home on February 10, 2015, in two close games. Tuesday was also pack the gym night, which was a chance for students to come and earn spirit points for showing up, and they could also earn extra points by dressing up for the theme, which was green-out. During half-time for both games, two people were chosen from a drawing to shoot for prizes.
On Monday, February 9th, the New Haven Lady Shamrocks played a very tough game against the Owensville Dutchgirls.
Homecoming coronation was held on February 6, 2015, in the New Haven High School gym. The coronation was held between the JV and varsity boys’ basketball games against Union. The New Haven Shamrocks faced the Silex Owls on Thursday, January 22nd, during Pack the Gym night, which had a hippie theme. Students who attended the game dressed as hippies were awarded with spirit points--participation points that get the winning class closer to a pizza party at the end of the year. The senior class had the highest participation for the night.
The junior varsity game started off the night. The starting line-up included Mackenzie Bauer, Emma Engelbrecht, Emily Scheer, Lauren Gerlemann, and Kate Ruediger. During first quarter, the ball was constantly traded between teams, with New Haven stealing the ball when Silex had possession. By the three minute mark, New Haven was in the lead, with a score of 9-0. Lauren Gerlemann was then granted two free throws and made one out of the two. New Haven kept on stealing the ball from Silex and sinking baskets. Near the end of the quarter, Kate Ruediger was granted two free throws, making one of two. At the end of first quarter, the score was 26-2 New Haven. The second quarter also brought a bit of excitement when a Silex player sunk a three pointer. Play continued as normal, with the ball switching possession back and forth. Near the last two minutes of the quarter, Alison Long received three free throws. The score at halftime was 38-5, New Haven. During the halftime shootout, Cortanie Gale and Jacob Wilson shot baskets for prizes. The idea was to make one lay-up, one free throw, one three pointer, and one half court shot in thirty seconds. Prizes included a six pack of soda for the lay-up, a candy bar for the free throw, Subway served at lunch for the three pointer, and VIP parking and an extra life in dodgeball for making the half court shot. Both Cortanie and Jacob received a six pack of soda and a candy bar for making their shots. During the third quarter, Kate Ruediger was given two free throws, and she made both of them. Later, on the way down the floor to Silex’s basket, Emma Engelbrecht swooped in for a steal and lead New Haven to score another basket. The ball was then back in the possession of Silex once again, but Emily Scheer intercepted the ball, and New Haven scored again. The score at the end of the quarter was 60-8 with New Haven still leading. The fourth quarter continued on with New Haven and Silex trading the ball back and forth. The ending score of the junior varsity game was 62-14, with New Haven locking in the win. "The game went well," explained Emma Eichelberger. The Varsity game followed immediately after the junior varsity game, with Megan Shockley, Makenzy Vedder, Molly Munsinger, Kayla Borcherding, and Taylor Covington starting. The first quarter was a competition to keep the lead, with the ball constantly switching possession. Makenzy Vedder received two free throws and made one out of the two. Silex then threw the ball out of bounds, and the ball was back in New Haven’s possession. The score by the end of the quarter was 14-11 Silex . During second quarter the ball was thrown out of bounds by Silex two times in the beginning of the quarter. Possession was granted to New Haven both times. New Haven then fouled Silex, and Silex was given two free throws, one of which was made. Closer to the end of the quarter, the Owls were granted two more free throws, and only one was made. With only 36.5 seconds left in the quarter, Silex fouled New Haven. The score at the end of the second quarter was 30-23, with Silex still leading. During halftime, another shootout was held, and Trista Kormeier and Zack Vedder were the contestants. Trista Kormeier received a six pack of soda, a candy bar, and subway at lunch for making her three point shot. Zack Vedder received a six pack of soda for his lay-up. During the third quarter, Kayla Borcherding struggled to keep possession of the ball but passed the ball just in time to keep the ball in New Haven’s possession. Silex then attempted to steal the ball, but Makenzy Vedder intercepted. The rest of the quarter was a battle to stay in the lead, with an ending score of 41-35 Silex. The Fourth quarter was more of a battle for the ball. After Silex scored their first basket of the quarter, Coach Doug Peirick called for a full timeout. The score was 43-35 at this time. Silex made only one more basket in the game. Each time New Haven had the ball in possession, Silex would steal the ball to keep in the lead. New Haven made three more baskets after the timeout. With time becoming scarce, New Haven fouled Silex many times to try and get possession of the ball back. With only 15.6 seconds left in the quarter, Erin Scheer sunk a three point basket to pull New Haven within one point. Then, Silex stole the ball from New Haven to run out the clock, but the girls wouldn’t give up that easy and still tried to make the winning shot before the clock ran out. The New Haven Shamrocks, however, were unable to beat the Silex Owls, losing the game 45-44. "I was upset that we lost by one point," explained Shamrock player Lindsey Nixon, "but at least we didn't lose by a landslide." “The varsity game was intense, especially in that last minute,” mentioned NHHS senior Hannah Pehle. Even though the Varsity team didn’t win against the Owls, it was a constant battle for the ball. The next time the Shamrocks go up against the Owls, it might just be another close game! -by Karissa Durbin Monday night, the Shamrocks and the North Callaway Thunderbirds went neck and neck, scoring basket after basket during the first quarter. Going into halftime, the Thunderbirds outscored the Shamrocks 16 to 9, which put the Shamrocks down 29 to 14.
Coming out of the half, the Shamrocks picked up the pace and had quicker ball movement. Junior Lauren Bergner stated, “ I thought our offense was more efficient in the second half.” The Shamrocks battled back, but the Thunderbirds held the lead and won the game 49-39. Senior Megan Shockley led the team in points with ten, and senior Mackenzy Vedder had nine. The Shamrocks’ next game would be Wednesday night against the Russellville Indians. To start the Wednesday night second-round game, the Shamrocks took on the Indians. The game started off slow, but to end the first quarter, the Indians took the lead 11 to 4. The Indians pushed the ball up the court and set a lot of ball screens, which caused the Shamrocks to begin switching all screens. The Indians’ half court, full court press caused the Shamrocks to fumble the ball, which resulted in turnovers. However, after the half, the Shamrocks began to handle the pressure better and find the open girl on offense. Even so, the Shamrocks ended up losing, which meant they would play Friday at 6:00 against Montgomery County in the seventh place game. During Friday night’s game, the Shamrocks started off a little edgy and made unnecessary turnovers in the first few seconds of the game. Coach Peirick quickly called a timeout, which seemed to calm the girls down. The girls immediately turned their game around, quickly scoring and taking the lead over the Wildcats. Junior Erin Scheer was on fire. She went 6 for 9 from the field and one for two on her free throws. “I was pretty worried before the game because I couldn't make anything in warmups! I, like everyone else on the team, really wanted to win, so I just tried to add as much as I could to that effort,” stated Scheer. Seniors Megan Shockley and Molly Munsinger both went 3 for 5 from the field and both hit five free throws. “We shot a lot of free throws Thursday night in practice, which you could definitely see the improvement in Friday night’s game,” stated Munsinger. The Shamrocks responded well to the Wildcats’ zone and match up zone defense. Also, senior Carlie Steinbeck was able to pick up a charge. It was mid-way through the fourth quarter when the Wildcats began playing man defense and putting on a press that the Shamrocks began to fumble the ball. In the end, though, the Shamrocks persevered to win the game 52 to 40. The Shamrocks and Wildcats will battle it out again Monday night on New Haven’s court. -by Molly Munsinger The New Haven Shamrocks Girls’ basketball teams continued the basketball season with their first conference game of the new year, facing the Union Lady Wildcats on Monday, January 5th.

“Hey, batta batta, hey!” What voice did you hear in your head? It was probably deep and masculine, and thinking of a man in a baseball uniform is normal. Who would think of softball? There is a definite reason why softball was created--by the means of sexism. To prove this point, one can look at the very first time softball was actually played and the reasons why.
Last Saturday, the Shamrocks and Montgomery County Wildcats were playing in the Montgomery County Tournament for consultation, and the Shamrocks beat the Wildcats with their highest scoring game of the year. On December 12,2014 the Shamrocks were ready for the Montgomery county Wildcats .

Before the first quarter ended, one of Barat’s players received an injury and did not return for the rest of the game. The first quarter ended at a score of 12-10, with Barat in the lead.
