Bearcats Bounce Over Shamrocks

2/24/2015

Due to bad weather, the girls’ basketball games scheduled for Monday, February 16th, against Hermann were pushed back a day and played Tuesday, February 17th. The Junior Varsity girls’ and boys’ games were played at the Hermann middle school, while the Varsity girls and boys played at the high school.
The New Haven Varsity girls took the court for a six o'clock game against the Hermann Bearcats. This was the third time this season the two teams played each other. The Bearcats were able to fend off the Shamrocks for the third time, as they went on to win the game.

To start the game, the Bearcats got an early lead on the Shamrocks because their post players were able to score underneath. To end the first quarter, the Bearcats were up 15 to 1. The Shamrocks, however, did not give up. During the second quarter, the Shamrocks picked up their intensity and were able to score 13 points. Going into halftime, the Bearcats were up 29 to 14. Senior Kayla Borcherding stated, “ I thought as the game progressed, we seemed to improve.”

The Shamrocks continued to play hard, but the Bearcats went on to win the game 48 to 32. Kayla Borcherding was the Shamrocks leading scorer with 11 points, 4-6 on free throws, 6 points within the paint and she hit a three pointer. Megan Shockley was the next leading scorer with 8, shooting 6 within the paint and hitting two free throws.

The Shamrocks’ next game will be against St. Clair before districts start. “Although tonight’s game did not go as planned, I hope the St. Clair game will help prepare us for districts, and I am excited to see how far we’ll make it,” stated Molly Munsinger.

Following the girls game, the boys took the court for their second time playing Hermann this year. The boys battled back and forth with the Bearcats. At the end of the first quarter, New Haven was up 11 to 10. Senior Dylan Goodwin commented, “ I thought we played with Hermann, but we needed play better than them.” Going into halftime, however, Hermann took the lead 21 to 19 over the Shamrocks. After a well-fought second half, the Shamrocks fell short to the Bearcats, 47 to 41. Senior Brandon Carey ended the night with ten points in the paint and eight rebounds, three of those being offensive. Senior Kyle Rudiger ended the night with eight points in the paint and one three pointer, and junior Jared Horstman contributed eight points to the Shamrocks’ score. _

The boys and girls will play one more regular season game before the boys start district play at Barat Academy on Monday, February 23, and the girls will play Tuesday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
