On Thursday, February 23, the New Haven Middle School volleyball team played their first game of the 2017 season. The seventh graders kicked off the night with a game that kept you on the edge of your seat the whole game. The first set was a back and forth set, but the shamrocks came out on top, and they were ready for the next set. The shamrocks were hoping for an easy set to end the game, but Washington was not going to give up that easily. The Washington Blue Jays won the second set which was a battle the whole time. The Shamrocks had had enough and wanted this victory. The Shamrocks got easily to the 23 point when Washington served multiple aces. Finally the shamrocks got their 24 point and finished the game on top. The seventh grade Shamrocks were ecstatic with their victory. By: Carter Moeckli
In the nearing winter of 2015 a senior of NHHS named Garret Shoenfeld had taken in a abandoned and abused dog who was only one year old and had been finding her own food. We believe she was abandoned because she had been staying in the middle of nowhere waiting for the previous owner to return. Garret had seen the dog for about a week and one day he had come close to hitting her, so he had picked her up and brought her to the Moeckli House where the dog got a name: Katie Elizabeth Moeckli. She was very skinny-almost to where you could see her rib cage. Later that night Katie was taken to the vet where we found out that she was a female, and she wasn’t chipped so Melissa Moeckli, the wife of Jeff Moeckli, mother of Kierstin Monzyk and Carter Moeckli, and Step-mother of Chase Moeckli, posted the lost dog’s picture and information on facebook. One month went by and nobody responded to her post. Katie got a well balanced diet and now is a 61 lbs dog who is about three years old. So far Katie has found a permanent home at the Moeckli home. She shows her appreciation by bringing them gifts of dead rodents and deer legs to their front yard during the summer. Katie is now a permanent part of the family, and as far as they can tell she loves her new home. By: LeeAnna Linton
Peggy Borcherding is the friendly secretary you see when you walk into New Haven High School. Her full name is Peggy Sue Borcherding (née Meyer). Peggy has 3 older sisters. She also has 2 sons: Craig, who is 34 and resides in New Haven, and Luke, who is 27 and resides in Okeechobee, Florida. She also has 2 grandchildren, from Craig and his wife, Mrs. Katie Borcherding-- art teacher at NHHS. Her granddaughter is named Josephine and her grandson is named Frederick. Peggy graduated from NHHS in May of 1977 and became the high school secretary in August of that year. When asked why she decided to work at NHHS, she stated, “There was an opening at school and I decided to apply. I had no idea at the time I would still be here in 2017. It was a really great decision on my part.” In her free time, Peggy enjoys sewing, reading, and gardening; although, her favorite thing to do is spend time with her grandchildren and family. When asked what she is passionate about, Peggy pronounced, “I am the most passionate about my family. My family definitely comes first.” Her favorite thing about New Haven is that it is a small town that supports and takes care of the community. Her favorite food is cheesecake, and her biggest pet peeves concern digital clocks and velcro vs. laces on tennis shoes. She doesn’t like digital clocks because she believes everyone should be able to tell time on analog clocks. And her shoelaces vs. velcro pet peeve stems from her belief that everyone should learn to tie their shoes at a young age. Peggy wanted to say it has been extremely enjoyable and an honor to work at NHHS these past 40 years, with a great staff and wonderful students. As many people would say, Peggy is a very important aspect to NHHS. Mrs. Katie Borcherding said, “Subtracting 4 years for college, I have been in this building with Peggy since I was 12 years old (we used to have grades 6-8 in the middle school). I am nearing 35 years old, so I've known and worked with Peggy for a substantial part of my life and I'm married to her oldest son, so I'm around Peggy pretty much 24/7 now. She's an excellent grandmother. She actually has an extra purse packed at all times with toys and treats just for her grandkids. They love to go to her house to bake cupcakes, eat frosting, read books, and watch Daniel Tiger. My children, Josie and Freddie, adore their ‘Gigi’.” Mr. Ray Steinhoff stated, “Peggy is just a terrific person--nice, polite, thoughtful, helpful…. She is also terrific at her job--organized, hard working, detailed…. I can't really explain how much she has helped me through the years. I could never thank her enough for all she has done for not only me, but also for New Haven High School.” Mrs. Debra Smith pronounced, “Peggy always has time for every question or interruption, and never complains. With her cheerful disposition, she makes the office a pleasant place to visit.” Mrs. Samantha Hausmann said, “Peggy always gives me the heads up when snacks are coming to the office. She has my back.” Mr. Michael Hagedorn stated, “I have been teaching here 23 years. The office is a fine tuned oiled machine because of Peggy. She can tell you about anything you want to know that is happening in the district within seconds. She does an awesome job. Peggy has made my job much easier over the years. She is always willing to lend a helping hand. When it comes to helping you get a jammed paper out of the copier or finding out if a student was unexcused, Peggy is the person you need to see. Thanks for all that you do, Peggy!” Lastly, Mrs. Jaime Hoener pronounced, “Peggy's longevity at her job and her dedication to the school should not go unnoticed. Her attention to detail and her ability to do many things very well are an inspiration to others. She misses very few days of work, but when she does, we're all a little uneasy because things just don't run quite as smoothly when she's not here.” From all of us here at New Haven High School, thank you, Peggy, for your hard work and dedication to our school. You are the true definition of a Shamrock! By: Lexie Nixon
There are 3 months before graduation, meaning kids are starting to slack off. One major problem that comes up is senioritis. Senioritis is when seniors develop a lack of motivation or decline in performance nearing the ending of their final year in high school. LeeAnna Linton would describe it as “when you get to the dull parts of the year and you're ready for summer to start. You're just ready to be out of school for the year. I don’t think it just happens to seniors, I think it can happen to anyone.” Think you’re struggling with this? Here are 7 ways to prevent or lower symptoms of senioritis:

In their final regular season game in Hermann on Thursday the 16th, New Haven pulled out a close one with a 41-36 win over the rival Bearcats. The win gives New Haven a conference record of 4-3 on the season. Junior Lauren Gerlemann led the way in scoring for the Shamrocks with 13 points, while also grabbing 8 rebounds. Fellow junior Emily Scheer followed with 12 points, while shooting 2-5 from 3-point range. Sophomore Allison Stiers led the way in scoring for Hermann with 17 points, along with 7 rebounds. She was followed by junior Brooke Grosse and senior Emily Engemann, who both finished with 6 points each. Coach Doug Peirick commented on the game stating, “It was another good win in these last few games for us. Anytime you can go onto another team’s home court in the Four Rivers Conference and come out with a win, you deserve to feel good about it.” He continued: “It was also the second time we played them this year, and that’s never an easy task. Hermann is a really good team. Coach Anderson always has them prepared and ready to play. Our girls were able to execute our game plan, and we came away with a very good team victory.” With New Haven winning their district tournament, they will play in the sectional round at Hannibal High School Wednesday at 7:45 P.M. against Scotland County. Good luck, Green! |
