We all read news. Whether it be fun stories about toddlers and how they’re afraid of their own shadow, or news about the latest natural disaster. Without news, we all would be uninformed and uneducated. On Monday, March 6, a poll was sent out to all NHHS students, asking what sources each individual uses most often and where they get their news from. They could pick as many of the options as they wanted. 68 responses were recorded: 31% from seniors, 16% juniors, 22% sophomores, and 31% freshmen. According to the results, and although Facebook and Fox News were close behind, Snapchat is the most commonly used source of news among NHHS students, at 18%. Fox News took almost 16% of the responses, Facebook with 15%, CNN with 13%, and Instagram with 12%. Other options listed-- BBC News, ABC News, Yahoo, and Google News-- were ranked with a total of 26%. Students were also asked in the form, “what social media sites do you use most often, generally?” The results of this poll showed Snapchat usage amongst students at 29%. Instagram placed second with 27% and Facebook with 22%. Below is a visual representation of how the results fell in regard to the news we at NHHS use most often. The size of the words represents the frequency of each source’s use. Send checks to Katie Borcherding (kborcherding@newhavenschools.us) payable to New Haven School District.

With a 37-35 sectional loss to Scotland County last Wednesday, the Shamrocks’ season came to an end in Hannibal. New Haven finished with a record of 20 wins and 8 losses. Here is a recap of this season. Leading the team in scoring and rebounding this year was junior Lauren Gerlemann with 14.3 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. After two varsity seasons, Gerlemann’s career scoring total stands at 716 points. Junior Emily Scheer led the team in 3 point shooting, making 48 of 90 attempts from 3 point range. Scheer’s performance from 3 point range this season set a new single-season school record for 3 point percentage with 53%. Scheer also moved into second place on the school’s single-season list for 3 pointers made. The Shamrocks finished with a conference record of 4-3, for a 3rd place finish in the Four Rivers Conference. New Haven defeated their biggest rival Hermann twice, both times in Hermann, with the first of the two in the championship game of the Bearcats’ tournament. New Haven also received a 3rd place finish in both the Montgomery County and South Callaway tournaments. The Shamrocks also received a 1st place finish in the Hermann tournament. Coach Doug Peirick commented on the season, stating, “I think we had a really good season. Finishing 20-8 and 4-3 (3rd place finish in the conference), especially with our competitive schedule and with the Four Rivers Conference having one of its most competitive years, is pretty good.” Lone senior Brooklyn Covington stated, “We may not have made it as far as we would have liked, but it has been a great run. I was sad that it was my last time being on the court with all my teammates. I will truly cherish these last 4 years forever.” Junior Emily Scheer commented, “I think we really improved as the season went on, and I was very pleased with how we did. None of us wanted to see it come to an end, but we are looking forward to what next year has in store for us.” When Gerlemann was asked about her favorite moments of the season, she stated, “My first was winning the Hermann tournament. We played very well throughout that whole tournament, which I think was the turning point of our season. My other favorite memory of the season was winning districts on our home court, which it doesn’t get better than that.” This was a very exciting year to watch Shamrock basketball. Thanks for a great season, ladies. By: Ethan Groner
After lacking an actual “track” for a few years, New Haven High School now almost has a fully functional track to host meets. During the construction over the past year and a half, the track has acquired much with the help of the community through donations and fundraisers. In this time, it has been announced by Coach John Tucker that we are hosting the class 1 district track meet for the next 2 years. However, the track team still has some learning to do before doing so. A new event called “pole vault” is something that the team hasn’t competed in for a long time. Now that we have the equipment possible to do so, Coach Tucker claims that about 12 athletes are trying out for the new event. To host a fully functional meet with all of the required equipment, they still need a shed (for the equipment), fully functional restrooms, flags for relay exchanges, bleachers for the audience to sit on, and rakes for the jumping pits. However, they’ve already purchased new starting blocks, mats, and other small equipment. These were purchased during the summer and offseason. When asked about the athletes who are going to jump, Coach Michael Hagedorn stated, “I have high expectations for the jumpers this year. Since Lauren finished first in triple jump and second in long jump in the state, the bar has been set pretty high. Emma Engelbrecht ended up getting second in triple jump.” He continued: “We have a lot of promise in high jump right now too. Most of the boys that were high jumping last year were freshmen. This year Martin, Domenic, and Sebastian should step up and be able to compete with the juniors and seniors from other schools. Overall, I look for us to be very competitive with most schools in all of the jumping events. When Brady Kruse heals from his surgery, he should improve from his 5th place finish in the long jump at districts.” Coach Tucker also quoted, “We will be hosting districts for the next 2 years, which is awesome. It’s really nice to know that we won’t be changing districts either, which is always a possibility.” Finally, sophomore Domenic Olson stated, “I’m really excited to host districts. I’m also really excited to test out the new equipment. It should be a fun season.”

Mrs. Soete works at New Haven Elementary and the middle school. She graduated in 1985 from Lindbergh High School and graduated college in 1993. Mrs. Soete went to SEMO (Southeast Missouri State) and Missouri Baptist College, earning a degree in Child Development and a minor in Behavior Science. She is one of the New Haven High School cheerleading coaches, paraprofessional in the special education department, and she enjoys supporting local businesses. Mrs. Soete was asked what her favorite thing about New Haven is, and she said, “I have many favorite things about New Haven. I love small town living. Where we all know each other and work together to help each other. I also wanted to raise my kids in a smaller town. There were 532 students in my graduating class. I wanted Will and Grace to go to a small school where all the teachers know them.” She has a daughter that is a sophomore, Grace, and a son who’s a senior, Will. She said that she enjoys cooking, shopping with Grace, traveling and hanging with friends during her free time. She wanted to work in New Haven so her schedule would match her kids’. Mrs. Soete was questioned what her passion is, and her reply was, “I am passionate about the youth in New Haven. I want to help and encourage them to work hard for things they want. I want them to believe they have greatness inside of them, and to have pride in what they are doing and working for.” A quote that she wants every student to read is, “How you make others feel about themselves, says a lot about you.” Everyone has a pet peeve, and hers happens to be when papers are crumpled, wrinkled, or not neat. She also doesn’t like when her kids don’t listen to her, or when people chew with their mouths open. Her two favorite shows are Outlanders and This is Us. Her favorite song is “Wanna Be That Song” by Brett Eldredge. Thank you, Mrs. Soete, for being a part of the Tradition of Excellence and being a Shamrock for New Haven. By: Abbey Grater
ARTC is a program for middle schoolers who enjoy art and being creative and who want to learn about themselves and their artistic ability. Similar to an art club, ARTC starts today from 2:45 to 3:45 P.M. in the art room and will end on Monday, May 8th, 2017. Students must of turned in their release form by Friday, March 10th. The students who participate will have the opportunity to explore many different artistic media in this group. According to Mrs. Roth, “ARTC (Achieving Resiliency Through Creativity) is a group offered by a local not for profit organization, Preferred Family Healthcare. This group will be facilitated by Michelle McClain, myself, and Mrs. Borcherding.” Mrs. Roth commented, “It is hoped that students will learn some healthy coping skills and boost self confidence in the process. I sought this program out because I feel many students could benefit from this creative outlet. If you start, you are expected to attend every Monday. If students have questions or concerns, please contact me or Mrs. Borcherding. Mrs. Borcherding and myself are very excited to bring this opportunity to NHMS!” Mrs. Borcherding said, “I've been wanting to start an art club at New Haven for a while. Right now we have an extremely talented group of middle school students that I think could become very successful artists in high school and beyond. By: LeeAnna Linton
Throughout almost four years at New Haven High School, the seniors have made a lot of memories. Some of the seniors have serious memories that they look back on, while others are on the sillier side. Alison Long stated, “My favorite high school memory was when the fire alarm sounded and we had to evacuate the high school right after the NHS induction ceremony. I had just sat down to eat my piece of cake and the alarm began to go off. ‘Really, Mr. Kruse? It is not really the best time for a fire drill’, I thought to myself. But in reality, smoke was filling the middle school hallways. We sat waiting at the Baptist church until Mr. Hoener entered and told us that the entire building was burned to the ground. He was joking of course and stated that everything was okay. We made our way back to the high school, singing our school’s alma mater when we got to the sign. It was eventful and incredibly memorable.” Zack Vedder said, “Breaking both of my wrists at the same time, then getting 8 stitches in my middle finger while I had the two broken wrists.” Brady Kruse pronounced, “Winning 3rd place at state and breaking the school record in the 4x400 was pretty cool last year.” Kate Weiser stated, “I love the start of each year. Everyone realizes how much they have missed each other and have so many summer adventures to tell. For me, it is time when I have a light homework load, no practice, and the weather is still perfect for summer activities. My favorite event around this time is swimming intramurals. I love to show off my swimming skills and have my whole class cheering behind me! The publication photographers always get fun, action pictures and video for the yearbook. I enjoyed having a relay all four years and always succeeding in the butterfly. I remember designing and making matching team t-shirts each year after class. I am really going to truly miss moments like these!” Matthew Fitts said, “My favorite high school memory is the final Leadership week celebration in the gym because it was an awesome high school memory in my life.” Carolyn Allgaier pronounced, “My favorite high school moment would have to be from one of the MSU band-major-for-a-day trips. I had gotten to talk to the head flute professor from there, and in turn, she let me play the school's contrabass flute, which just happened to be taller than I am.” Lucy Roth stated, “The most memorable moment from the past 4 years was winning 3rd place in State for Cross Country. Coach Tucker never had a team win, so it was exciting winning it for him. When we found out we had won, we were all so proud, happy, and energetic. Holding the trophy with Emily and the rest of the girls was so much fun.” Nicki Zeitzmann stated, “My favorite high school memory is becoming a state champion in the 4x400 my sophomore year in track.” Lastly, Will Soete pronounced, “My favorite memory is beating Sullivan on basketball senior night my sophomore year.” With only a few more months left of high school, the seniors of New Haven have a lot of memories to reflect on that they will cherish. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in a Youth Seatbelt Enforcement Campaign.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office announced today they are joining with statewide law enforcement March 15-31 for an aggressive youth seatbelt mobilization to crack down on Missouri’s seat belt law violators and to reduce highway fatalities. Only 70 percent of Missouri teens wear their seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Eight out of ten teen vehicle drivers and passengers killed in traffic crashes are unbuckled. Under the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) law, teens are required to wear their seatbelt as it’s a primary offense, meaning they can be pulled over solely for not wearing their seatbelt. “Local motorists should be prepared for stepped up seatbelt enforcement,” said Sgt. Weggemann . “We’ll be out there to remind you seat belts can – and do- save lives.” Seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. Buckle Up and Arrive Alive. For more on Missouri seatbelt usage, visit www.saveMOlives.com. Brandi Kubiak (Left) earns 2nd place and Ellie Westermeyer (Right) earns 1st.

The new spring season of track and field at New Haven High School began Monday, February 27th. All students participating in track and field from the middle school and high school have the chance to participate in a new event at NHHS called pole vault. Pole vault is an event in which competitors attempt to vault over a high bar using the end of a long, flexible pole. But that's not all track athletes can do. They can run the mile, the two-mile, or participate in the high jump, and even more. Track athletes don't just run, they also throw-- for instance, athletes can participate in javelin events or the discus throw. Also, all athletes get to participate in four events at a meet. Lauren Gerlemann commented, “I plan on competing in the long jump for sure, and the rest of my events I have yet to decide. I'm looking forward to a successful year and improving my times and jumps from last year. I think track and field is competing hard in your personal event(s), and earning your team points so you can celebrate your team victory.” Mr. Witthaus also stated, “I would love to see if they can repeat and improve what they were able to accomplish last year. [I would] also like to see some improvements as the year goes on. I would like to see times improve week by week. But they will be put through some pretty strenuous workouts. They will need to pay attention to details.” Mr. Witthaus continued: “I think track and field is all about teaching our athletes responsibility on and off the track. Hopefully they see that hard work pays off in the present and in the future.” Lastly, Ryan Blankenship commented, “My passion is to run and push my team members to strive to do better. A couple of my events are pole vault, javelin, and the 4x800 relay. I would love to see all of my teammates go to state this year and place.” Blankenship continued by saying, “I think track and field is about finding out some of your strengths and weaknesses [and learning] how to push yourself not just in track but in everyday life. [It is] also about building friendship and team-bonding.” New Haven High School senior Brady Kruse has been selected for the 2017 Missouri Scholars 100. This is a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri's top academic students in the graduating class of 2017. Missouri Scholars 100 program is sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. The selection is based on a formula using the student's GPA and ACT score. Students recognized must be taking upper level courses in Mathematics, Science, English and foreign language. Students must also have excellent attendance, be a good school citizen and be involved in school activities. Brady will be recognized at the Missouri Scholars 2017 banquet in April.
New Haven High School has named Lauren Gerlemann as its’ February Student of the Month. Lauren is the daughter of Jim and Lisa Gerlemann. At NHHS, Lauren is involved in FBLA, FCCLA, FCA, National Honor Society, Student Council and serves as the Junior Class President. Lauren is also involved athletically in Volleyball, Basketball and Track. When not at school, a school activity, or a sporting event, Lauren likes to take drives with her friends and hang out at the Ice Cream Shoppe. Lauren works at Paradise Frozen Custard in Washington and is a lifeguard at the New Haven Pool. After graduation, she plans to attend a university and earn a doctorate in physical therapy. Congratulations Lauren!!! By: Lexie Nixon
This year, the boys’ basketball team season came to an end with a 7 to 20 win-loss ratio. Will Soete, point guard on the team, is a senior this year at New Haven High School. Will was asked how he feels about this being his last season, and he responded with, “Every good thing has to come to an end. It's been a roller coaster ride but I wouldn't ask for it any other way, especially with such great guys.” Aaron Peirick, coach of the New Haven boys basketball team, was asked what his overall thoughts of the 2017 season are, and he responded with, “I thought that we never stopped fighting or gave in. We definitely had our struggles with injuries or bad plays but we ended up playing some pretty good basketball at the end of the season.” The boys played 2 games into districts. The Shamrocks started off districts with a win against Crystal City. The resulting game against McKinley brought our boys’ 2017 season to an end with a final score of 35 to 40. The boys’ basketball team consisted of 6 seniors: Will Soete, Justin Shockley, Mark Senecal, Aaron Penning, Zach Vedder, and Brady Kruse. With the season coming to an end, the boys who aren't graduating have another season ahead of them next year. Ethan Groner, a guard on the team, was asked what he expects from his next 2 seasons. He responded: “I expect us to do very well these next two seasons and have a lot of fun; however, this can only be succeeded by working hard this summer and improving as players. I have learned a lot from the juniors and seniors and will never forget the memories.” |
