JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered that the flags of the United States and the State of Missouri at all state government buildings in St. Louis County be flown at half-staff on Thursday (Oct. 13) in honor of St. Louis County Police Office Blake Snyder, who died in the line of duty on Oct. 6. September 23rd and 24th, New Haven held its annual Balloon Glow and Balloon Race at the New Haven City Park. This is a festival where friends and family get together to enjoy a weekend of good food, beautiful weather, and quality time together. The Balloon Glow was on Friday, September 23rd. This event occurred from 6:00 P.M. to around 8:00 P.M. The balloons were set up a little before dark, and people were able to come out to the city park and relax on this cool, September evening. During this time, each balloon took a turn lighting up to show off its bright and beautiful colors to the delighted crowd. When New Haven senior Emily Lewis was asked about her thoughts on the Balloon Glow, she responded, “It's just really enjoyable to see our entire community come together for one night to enjoy each other's company at this local festival!” The following day, Saturday, September 24th, was the more eventful day of this festival. The afternoon started out with a parade, which included a variety of floats accompanied by the New Haven High School marching band. Following the parade, people began to set up their blankets and claim the best spots to watch the balloons take off. While the crowds were waiting, they were welcome to roam about and check out the stands set up. These stands offered things like soda, cotton candy, barbecue, and much more! When Taylor Oetterer was asked what her favorite thing about the balloon festival was, she exclaimed, “Getting together with all my friends to just have a good time.” The Balloon Festival is an event that families and friends always look forward to. If you missed the Balloon Festival this year, make sure you check out the activities it has to offer next fall! By: Jacob Wilson The impact Coach Hoener has had on the New Haven volleyball program cannot even be explained. Thursday evening, September 29th, between the junior varsity and varsity matches against the Sullivan Eagles, she was presented with the 2015-2016 Missouri High School Volleyball Coach of the Year Award. When asked what made her want to be a coach, she stated, “I have always loved the sport and felt like I could help girls become better players.” Junior Emma Engelbrecht, who has started for Coach Hoener since her sophomore season, commented that, “She always pushes her players to do their best and always looks for improvement.” Coach Hoener began her teaching and coaching career in August 2000, as an assistant coach for the Shamrocks under Julie Westermeyer (née Gerdes). She then took over the head coaching duties in 2002. In her first season as head coach, she led her team to an overall record of 17 wins and 9 losses. In 2005, she led the Shamrocks to their first Four Rivers Conference title since 1992. Also, in the same season, Hoener became the third person in school history to win a state championship as a player (1992) and as a head coach (2005). After taking a few years off from coaching in 2007, she became head coach again in 2012. After the two set win Thursday night, her overall coaching record stands at 242 wins, 107 losses, and 19 ties. This season is her 11th season as head coach. In her previous 10 seasons, Coach Hoener won 2 conference championships, 5 district titles, made 3 Final Four appearances, and won one state championship. Coach Hoener has had players named to the all-conference team 34 times and to the all-district team 41 times. A player has been selected to the all-region team 18 times and to the Missourian all-area team 34 times. In the Coach Hoener era, a player has been selected to the all-state team 13 times. Coach Hoener has always emphasized to her athletes that academics come first. During her tenure, New Haven has had players named to the academic all-conference team 74 times and named to academic all-state 35 times. Commenting on her favorite coaching memory, she claimed that, “Winning conference and state by far is at the top of the list.” Thank you, Coach Hoener, for everything you have done for our school, and congratulations on receiving this prestigious award! 5 Seconds of Summer, a band from Sydney, Australia, were on their last leg of the US tour. On August 19, they stopped in Maryland Heights, MO, and performed with their openers, Roy English and Hey Violet, at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. There were lines filled with screaming fans backed up for hours. As everyone filed into their seats, “21 Guns” by Green Day was blaring over the speakers, and you could feel the crowd getting hyped up. As the house lights dimmed, you heard a roar erupt from the crowd that, just a few moments earlier, had died down once the openers had gotten off the stage. As the name that made everybody scream flashed across the screen, out came the band 5 Seconds of Summer onto the stage. As they played one of their hits, “Waste The Night”, you could turn around and, for as far as you could see, everyone was holding lit-up phones and signs that said “STL Loves You”. “They put on a truly entertaining show, ” said one mom. “I came with my daughter and found myself enjoying them and dancing.” The four-piece Australian band had never done a show in Missouri before, and the reaction they got from the crowd clearly showed that it was long overdue. |
