By LeeAnna Linton Wendy Oelrichs is an enthusiastic, energetic science teacher here at New Haven High School. Mrs. Oelrichs’s full name is Wendy Ann Scheer Oelrichs. She has two brothers: Charlie (35) and Allen (32), and has four nephews: Kyle (7), Evan (5), Sam (2), and Logan (2). She also has 2 kids: Ava who is 10 years old and is in the fifth grade, and Dane who is 8 years old and is in the third grade. She may be a science teacher, but Mrs. Oelrichs is also the adviser for the New Haven High School National Honor Society chapter. When asked why she decided to be the adviser for NHS, she said, “I wanted to be more involved with students at school outside of the classroom setting, so when the opportunity to sponsor National Honor Society presented itself, I jumped on it. It’s such an honor and a privilege to work with the “best of the best” at NHHS!” After a slow holiday weekend, the New Haven Police Department spent Sunday evening working several cases at once. Officer James Birmingham stopped a vehicle for careless and imprudent driving, and arrested a subject for Driving While Intoxicated. Birmingham contacted Officer David Burke, who agreed to come in and work while he transported the suspect to the hospital and jail. Shortly after Officer Birmingham left city limits with the alleged intoxicated driver, Officer Burke was dispatched to a physical domestic in progress. Capt. Dan Terry and Sgt. Meg Parks were called in to assist. Both the suspect and the victim had left the scene, and a search for both was underway. The victim was located at an apartment on Sunset Ln., where she was attended by ambulance personnel. She was covered in blood, but refused medical treatment. Franklin County Sheriff’s Department sent a deputy to assist, and the area was searched for the suspect. By Lauren Bergner
On November 23, 2015, the girls’ varsity Shamrock basketball team began their season on their home floor. To kick off their season, the girls faced the Bourbon Warhawks. When asked about her pregame feelings, senior Erin Scheer stated, “It was definitely that same bittersweet feeling that I'm sadly starting to become a little too familiar with! I was actually pretty nervous, too. On top of all of that though, I was really excited! Excited for the season in general, the team we have, and playing with my sister!” The starters for the night were sophomore Emily Scheer, sophomore Lauren Gerlemann, senior Emma Borcherding, senior Erin Scheer, and senior Lauren Bergner. The New Haven Preservation Society has scheduled its 28th annual Christmas Candlelight House Tour for Sunday, December 6, 2015. The event kicks off with a Christmas Choral Concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the St. Peters United Church of Christ located at 607 Maupin St. This will be followed by a candlelight house tour featuring six area homes.
An added attraction for this year’s event is a large display of nativities which can be viewed at the Old Schoolhouse located at 810 Maupin St. A room filled with dozens of nativity crèches from countries and cultures around the world will be open to the public. Carol Kuhlmann, a local musician, will perform holiday music on the lap harp at the nativity display. This Friday, December 4th, New Haven High School will host their annual Ugly Christmas contest. Spirit points will be awarded for everyone who wears a sweater, and the class with the most spirit points overall at the end of the year will win an ice cream and pizza party. Also, the person with the ugliest sweater will win a giant cookie.
NHHS, get ready for the good, the bad, and the ugly. The New Haven Garden Club will join the community in celebrating the holiday season with its seventh annual Community Christmas tree lighting festivities on December 5 at 6:00 P.M. The tree, located on the corner of Olive and Main Streets, in downtown New Haven is adorned with numerous ornaments created by members of the garden club. We look forward to meeting our friends and neighbors under the Christmas tree as we enjoy hot cocoa and homemade cookies and join the New Haven High School Choir under the direction of Katherine Taylor, choir director, as they lead us in the singing of traditional Christmas carols.
