The week of Monday the 27th through Saturday the 2nd, New Haven varsity boys and girls basketball teams participated in the Montgomery County tournament. Overall, the girls took second and the boys took sixth.
The girls’ first victory was against the Wellsville Lady Tigers on Monday the 27th, with a score of 62-14. The team advanced on to play Bowling Green on Wednesday the 29th. The girls pulled out another win, beating the Bobcats 43-35.
With two wins under their belt, New Haven moved on to the championship game against the Hermann Bearcats on Saturday the 2nd. After fighting hard, New Haven came in second place 52-43.
New Haven varsity girls head coach Doug Peirick commented, “Overall I think we had a good tournament. Any time you play for a championship it makes for a good tournament. I was a little disappointed with the outcome of the championship game, but we lost to a better team that night. Hermann played better than us pretty much all night. We will learn from this and hopefully it will make us a better team throughout the year. I was proud of all of the girls and the effort they put forth each night. Even when we were trailing we never gave up.”
The boys’ first competition was against the Hermann Bearcats on Tuesday the 28th. After a close game, New Haven fell short of a victory at 37-34.
On Thursday the 30th, with a score of 39-47, the team took a win against the Silex Owls. After one win and one loss, New Haven played for consolation on Friday the 1st. The boys took on the Bowling Green Bobcats, and the team lost after a tough match at 47-40.
New Haven varsity boys head coach Aaron Peirick stated, “We did not do what we wanted to do, which was win at least two games. In each of our 3 games we had a quarter where we were not as good as we needed to be and it did us in twice, but I thought we competed hard every night-- I'm proud of that. We appreciate the fans, students, and cheerleaders that made the trip up there to watch us and cheer us on last week. It's always nice to have a supportive crowd behind us.”
The New Haven JV boys took first at the New Haven tournament and the JV girls did not place in the Hermann tournament.
Congrats to all our basketball teams who took part in tournaments this week!
