Morning practices are a great solution to this problem! The cross country team takes advantage of the cooler weather in the morning. Several of the cross country runners also say that they prepare for practice by hydrating throughout the school day. Along with cross country, the softball team practices outside everyday as well. Lately, the softball team has been practicing from 7-9 when the temperatures are too hot. When I asked some of the softball girls how they prepare for practice, most of them responded by saying that they hydrate a lot throughout the day. Most of the girls agreed that wearing sunscreen was very important.
Brooke Bockting has played volleyball in the past and now plays softball. She says, “Having practice outside is better than having it in the gym because you get a breeze once in a while, but the sun is hot.” Volleyball practice is held inside the gym. The teams have been practicing from 7-9 also. The JV and freshman team went to the Memorial Baptist Church on Friday for an air conditioned gym.
Emma Borcherding and Erin Scheer both agreed that the heat makes them tired and feel slow. Emma Borcherding says, “even though the heat makes me tired, I like the sweat because it makes me feel like I’m working hard.” Lauren Bergner explained, “We will have hard practices anyway, but the heat just pushes us to do better.”
These temperatures should be changing soon. After the temperatures cool down, practices will be easier to schedule, and they will be back to normal. -by Kathy Jasper
