On Saturday, September 1, the New Haven Cross Country team hosted their New Haven Invitational for eighteen schools, including a visiting team from Tennessee. The first race was the Varsity girls, followed by the JV boys, then finally the Varsity boys. With the heat adding on to the tough course, it was challenging for everyone.
The athletes were asked what their feelings were on the race. Senior Martin Lewis said, “We had the hottest race of the day which is always nice… but I feel we, as a team, didn’t do as well as we would’ve liked. There is more work to be done!”
Hannah Borcherding, sophomore, said, “The race went really [well]; both teams did well. It was really hot and the course was difficult.”
The next question asked was if they know what they need to be working on now for upcoming meets, and if so, what? Freshman Ashlyn Beckmann responded, “I need to drink more water, work on my consistency, work on my pace/speed, and I need to work on pushing myself instead of others having to push me.”
“Encouraging my teammates and continuing to work hard in practice,” answered senior Joseph Rethemeyer.
The last question the athletes answered was how they thought the team did overall at the meet. Sophomore Hannah Borcherding answered, “I think the team did really well. I think that the heat got to some of us, but overall we did well.”
Senior Martin Lewis added, “We did alright. Disappointed we got out performed by Father Tolton, one of our competing district schools, but we at least know what we need to do in order to make it to state.”
“I think everyone did great job, but a few could have done better. I did horrible and I could have done better if it wasn't so hot and muggy,” responded freshman Ashlyn Beckmann.
Good luck to all of the runners at the upcoming cross country meets!
