The Lowdown on the Lockers

12/3/2014

If you were to tour New Haven High School, it would be seen that it is quaint, but still holds the essentials. This includes, classrooms, desks, hallways, and, of course, lockers. Now, on a normal tour of this school, it would be noticeable that all the lockers throughout the hallways, do not, in fact, have locks! This is an issue that comes up in conversation quite often between the students and also the staff of New Haven High. So, now is the time to say why New Haven High School doesn't need locks for their lockers.
Though it is a peculiar situation, there are many things to take into account.Julie Moeckli stated one point, “When we have a major sport event, parents put treat bags in our lockers because there is no lock. Besides, unlocking my locker between classes everyday wouldn't be convenient. “ With this perspective, you can see that it is not only a convenience for the students, but also for parents and teachers.

Two freshmen that came into the high school this year, however, had two different ideas. Blake Gale simply said, “I think this [locks] is a good idea because of our chromebooks.” Blake’s classmate, Elizabeth Hughes, was asked her thoughts on coming from middle school to high school, still with no locks. Elizabeth’s response was, “ In a way I found it to be disappointing.”  Responding to Blake’s comment, not having locks on the lockers does notinterfere with the protection of chromebooks. New Haven High School has made many different arrangements so that they never have to be left in the locker for long periods of time. This would then lessen the worry of something happening to them. Now in response to what Elizabeth said, it is understandable that not having the locks could be disappointing, but this outlook mostly would come from the media that we watch, like tv shows, that include locked lockers. How would we know we “needed” something without first witnessing it from someone else?

However, like Julie Moeckli said, there are pros to having this, “unlocked opportunity”; Parents are able to put goodies inside of the athlete’s locker for sporting events, and this gives the high schoolers a nice surprise to open up to.

In a small school such as New Haven, some may find it hard to believe that a student would steal something out of a classmate’s locker. Dakota Schroeder stated, “We are such a small school that we know and kinda trust everyone...we don’t have many valuables of our own in there, either. If something’s taken, it would probably be school property.”  This brings up the fact that no student is actually encouraged to bring anything of value to school.

Furthermore,  Mrs. Schlafer, a teacher at New Haven, has often been told by her colleagues from other schools that New Haven High must be like working in “happy land.” New Haven has carried this honorable status for quite awhile, and that could possibly play a role in why New Haven High School continues to not have locks on their lockers. Though it is not that noticeable at a glance, the students have realized, it is not such a normal element for a high school. Although, it is not normal, the locks for the lockers are not really needed.
