On September 6th, the New Haven High School students and teachers walked up to the New Haven Swimming Pool in the morning so they could do their yearly swimming intramurals. Each grade competed for spirit points in order to win the pizza and ice cream party that the winners get at the end of the school year.
Students were asked if they performed in any events, and sophomore Hannah Rethemeyer said, “Yes, I was in the freestyle, butterfly, and freestyle relay.”
Senior Julia Unnerstall said, “Nope, I was chillaxing on the sidelines.”
They were asked how they felt while swimming, and Hannah Rethemeyer said, “In the butterfly I felt great! But in the freestyle I felt like I was going to throw up, because I took so much water in.”
Junior Lauren Hoerstkamp stated, “DEAD! My legs were so tired, but I kept pushing till the end.”
Many other students have said that they felt tired and ready to give up, while others felt refreshed when getting in the water.
Students cheered on their fellow classmates while they swam in their races. They had signs up in the air, as they yelled at them to swim faster.
When questioned what their favorite moment was, senior Mikayla Maloney stated, “When Andrew and I were laughing so hard while pulling the tube to the finish line.”
Lauren said, “My favorite moment was when we were behind by about half the pool length and then I went in on the back stroke, caught back up, and Morgan finished it off with the win.”
Senior Lexi Oetterer exclaimed, “When my class (the seniors) beat the juniors at the boys freestyle relay. Everyone thought the juniors were going to win, including me. The first two boys in the senior class, Trent and Martin, were just like a second behind both of the junior boys. Then, Cole got the lead on the junior he was swimming against. And finally, Joseph was swimming with a little lead, but the junior swimming against him caught up, and Joseph was able to get to the wall in like a split second before the junior. It was a lot of fun because we all were cheering our hearts out, and we just went wild when we won.”
Even though the coldness and later heat bothered a few students, everyone still had fun. Great job, everyone!
