Students dance the night away at Homecoming

3/2/2018

By: Diana Ribera

From February 12-16, New Haven High School students had their spirit week. Spirit week is when students get to dress up as a theme for the day all week long. Students voted best dressed each day would get a carton of ice cream of their choice from Mrs. Borcherding. On Monday it was PJ day, and Michelle Bahena was the winner. Tuesday was Twin Day, and Martin Lewis and Christian Paterson were the winners. Wednesday was Sportswear, and the winner was Lauralie Grater. Thursday was Monochromatic Day (where students dressed in all one color), and Britany Willimann was the winner. Friday was Green Pride, and the winner was Dorian McCarty.

According to a survey, many of the students loved being able to dress up and have fun. Many students reported that their favorite day was pajama day. The reason would be because they didn’t have to dress up and could just be comfortable in school.

On February 16, the high school held their Homecoming coronation after the JV boys’ game.  The candidates arrived at 6:30 P.M., all dressed up and ready to go. The candidates for that evening were juniors Diana Ribera and Christian Paterson, Kamryn Poe and Trenten Kormeier, and Makenzie Munsinger and Russell Pinnell. Senior candidates were Lacie Grater and Cody Stanley, Sarah McKernan and Nathan Ford, and Hannah White and Devin Buchheit.

The winners for Homecoming were juniors Christian Paterson and Makenzie Munsinger. When asked how he felt about winning, Christian Paterson answered with, “When they said my name I felt very happy.”

The Homecoming dance started after the Varsity game, and the theme for it this year was the 50’s. Many of the students dressed as the theme by wearing a leather jacket with a white T-shirt underneath, wearing poodle skirts, or having their hair styled like the 50’s.

Some students were asked what their favorite moment of Homecoming was, and Kamryn Poe said, “Homecoming is always so much fun. I can’t possibly have one favorite moment. I really enjoyed the dance and all the throwback music that was played. I had a blast dressing to the 50’s theme as well. Overall, Homecoming was exciting!”

Alexander Trentmann, junior, said, “My favorite thing would have to be that they had some different songs compared to the past dances. Some of the songs weren't good, but it was different. I would also have to say watching my girlfriend walk down the court since she was a candidate-- she looked so cute.”

Mrs. Borcherding said, “We had a good student turnout, especially for all the dances. It’s a good money maker for Student Council, especially since we got new equipment.”
