The week before Thanksgiving break, New Haven High School had their 10th annual Leadership Week. Student Council hosts the annual event to raise money for a local charity. This year they chose to donate the proceeds to low-income families in our community to help pay for their utility bills this winter. $400 was raised throughout the course of the week.
Student Council President, Lauren Bergner, explains the background of Leadership Week. “The purpose of Leadership Week is to join groups of people together who normally don't associate with one another and to use teamwork to overcome the many challenges we throw at them over the course of the week.”
The week consisted of Penny Wars, tug-of-war, trivia, an obstacle course challenge, and warm fuzzies.
Warm Fuzzies were a new addition this year. The students received a necklace filled with pieces of colored string. and different students had different colors. Each student offered compliments to others in order to trade yarn pieces. By the end of the week, warm fuzzies were full of different colors, displaying how compliments can make a difference.
The main events occurred on Wednesday, 18th. “All the teams had different strengths and weaknesses which allowed them to use their unique abilities to include everyone in their group," Lauren Bergner commented.
The winning teams this year were Team America and Team Hippies. Team America placed 2rd in the obstacle course challenge, 4th in trivia, and had a negative penny balance of -5,255. Team Hippies won by earning the largest number of penny points, which totaled 817. Team Hippies also won the costume contest, placed 3rd in the obstacle course challenge, and got 4th in the Tug-of-War tournament.
The members of each winning team will receive Chinese food from China King this Friday.
Congratulations winners!
