Snap and Chat

1/25/2015

When you hear teens talking these days, you can often hear one question being asked, “Have you seen my snapchat story?”

The popular snapchat app that allows teens to “chat” using photos, videos, and captions was invented by 23-year-old co-founder Evan Spiegel. Snapchat is popular among teens for many reasons.

First,  the “self-destructing” feature. When a teen views a snapchat from his or her friend, he or she can only view it for up to ten seconds before it self destructs and can never be seen again. The app tells a user when the snap was viewed by the person it was sent it to as well. It also allows the person that is posting the snap to draw or insert text directly on it.

Second of all,  people are able to post stories fast and easy. Teens can show or tell all their friends what they have done throughout their day simply by just posting their picture along with a story on their snapchat. They can post their snap anywhere as long as they have Wi-fi, data, or an internet connection.

Third is the “score.” The “score” is based on the activity of the user. It lists three “best friends,” which are the people they communicate with the most. It is popular because people can see who they communicate with the most. Video chatting is also available on snapchat and allows one to talk to his or her friends right on the spot.

Students at NHHS enjoy using snapchat whenever they can:

Senior Courtney Yowell commented, “I think it’s good for wanting to see your family from out of town, and it is also a nice and fast way to talk to your friends.”

Emily Moreno said, “I like it because it’s like texting but you can send pictures. You can show the facial expressions you can’t show through texts.”

Emily Lewis remarked, “I love snapchat because its a fast way to send funny pictures about what you are doing. A picture is worth a thousand words, so when I don’t want to type a long passage out, I snapchat them.”

As you can see, snapchat has become very popular among teens for its different features. So if you're bored and have nothing to do, check your snapchat stories to see how many snaps you have got. Or, take that first step and sign up for snapchat!
