In modern times, slang is commonly used among the youth of America and basically everywhere else in the world. As far as slang goes, there are many different styles and words to express yourself as an individual.
One commonly used slang word today is SWAG, but there are some older examples. Righteous, gnarly, and radical are perfect examples in the past generation of slang.
Slang words are not just words that people make up to sound different; they can also help you convey your personality. For example, if you want to sound punky, you could use the word dude a lot or you could say that something is sick (which really means awesome), or you could say that things are chill.
If you want to go more for a country vibe, you could say anything from rev-it-up to get-er-done.
In modern pop culture, slang is also quite prominent with words like SWAG and YOLO. When referring to a boyfriend or girlfriend people often say bae. Turnt means a person is excited and yas is just another means of saying yes.
Many students use slang and have quite positive opinions of it. Fellow student Sharon Brewster said, “To me, I think that it all depends on the slang term. It’s one thing to call someone homie and it’s another thing to say lol or omg. I call people homie a lot. I honestly don't know why.”
Risa Allen says, “There is a certain environment where it is okay to use slang words.”
Celesse Smedley agrees with Risa’s sentiment, “I feel some slang terms in today's language is alright for casual conversation, but when it comes down to business, I don't believe people should say fleek when they are in a business meeting or in a business environment. I do often find myself using slang in everyday language because it has become part of our culture. I've found myself saying on point.”
Jeremy Mueller expresses his sentiment on slang terms; he thinks “they’re great.”
Emily Lewis had this to say: "I use the word sketch like a lot. One time Mr. Pruessner commented on it and our Algebra 2 class had a whole discussion on how it wasn't a word. But since I use it so often, those around me have even started saying it. Even Mr. Pruessner says it now!"
So as you can see, slang is totally hip fo shizzle!!!!
