Shamrock Conversations: Michael Hagedorn

3/31/2017

By: Diana Ribera

Michael Paul Hagedorn
is the New Haven High School biology, physical science, anatomy, genetics, and general science teacher. Mr. Hagedorn is also the middle school cross country and track coach, high school track jumping coach, and bus driver for track and cross country meets.

In terms of family, he has a sister who’s two years younger than he is. Mr. Hagedorn also has a baby that’s on the way, and according to him, taking care of her is his new passion.

Mr. Hagedorn graduated from Union High School in 1986. He then went to the University of Missouri- Columbia and graduated in 1991 and 2006 for his Master’s. He has Bachelor's degrees in education, anatomy, and biology. He also has a Master’s degree in counseling.

When asked what he loves to do on his free time, he said, “Traveling, working out, watching and playing sports, and meeting new people.”

He was asked what inspired him to become a teacher, and he replied with, “I love being around people. I like to make people better. I enjoy seeing growth in academics and sports. I chose to become a science teacher because I have always loved to learn about all the science topics.”

When asked what his favorite subject is, he added, “I like teaching anatomy the most. The human body has always amazed me.”

Mr. Hagedorn was questioned on why he wanted to work in New Haven, and he stated, “New Haven is close to my parents. [It] has always had a great reputation for sports and academics. People in New Haven are hard working.”

A quote he wants students to know is, “No matter what business you are in, you can’t run in place or someone will pass.”

Here’s a few facts about Mr. Hagedorn: He likes to binge watch on Netflix, his favorite song is “Machinehead” by Bush, his favorite movie is “Gladiator”, his favorite food is pizza, and one of his pet peeve is when people are unprepared [for class].

Thank you, Mr. Hagedorn, for being a Shamrock and being part of the Tradition of Excellence.
