Kelsey River is our new business teacher and FBLA advisor here at New Haven High School. Ms. River’s full name is Kelsey Rae River. She has a sister who is two years younger than Ms. River. Ms. River is also engaged to Tyler Anderson, who is a senior revenue management analyst at Enterprise Holdings in Clayton, MO, for Team Canada. In simpler terms, he manages rental car supply and demand for the airpoints in Canada. They are getting married on July 1, 2017.
Ms. River teaches Accounting 1 and 2, Marketing 1 and 2, Business Technology, Keyboarding, and Desktop Publication/Web Design here at NHHS. Not only is she an outstanding teacher, but she is also the New Haven High School’s FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) chapter advisor.
When asked why she wanted to be the FBLA advisor, she stated, “FBLA is such a great organization that helps students learn an array of business skills, participate in a variety of activities and competition, take on different responsibilities, give back to the community, in addition to building their confidence levels.”
Ms. River grew up in the area and graduated from Hermann High School in 2003. She then went on to attend Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and a Minor in Business in August of 2007, and then several years later, she went back to school at University of Central Missouri to obtain her Masters in Teaching in December of 2013.
When asked if she had to go back to college to become a teacher, Ms. River pronounced, “Yes, I did have to go back to become a teacher. After working in the business world for several years, I found that I wasn’t necessarily satisfied or fulfilled with my job role and ultimately decided that I wanted a career in education, which my mom had always told me I should pursue.”
In her free time, Ms. River loves being with friends and family, playing sand and indoor volleyball, and DIYing by refurbishing furniture. Some of Ms. River’s favorite places to go with her family and friends are to her family farm or Tyler’s family farm, the lake, and Kansas City.
When asked why she wanted to become a Business teacher, Ms. River said, “As most would assume, my mom was a huge inspiration for me. I saw the impact she made and the students who came back several years after they graduated and told her how thankful they were for what she taught them. It’s my goal and hope to make that kind of impact on my students as well. Additionally, I found that when I was out working, there were so many things I wished I would have been told/taught before I graduated. I felt like I could bring a lot of what I learned out in the field into the classroom to better prepare students once they graduate high school.”
When talking about NHHS, she said, “I wanted to work at New Haven because of the sense of community and pride that this town has. The support that the school and teachers receive from community members, parents, students, and local businesses is something that is hard to come by. Additionally, the student body is something my mom always told me was second to none. You don’t often find students that give so much in terms of academics and extracurricular activities. Also, my favorite thing about New Haven would definitely have to be the people! From my co-workers to the students and parents, local businesses, and community members, everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.”
In conclusion, Ms. River would just like to state how happy she is to be apart of the New Haven School District. She says that she feels blessed and fortunate to get the opportunity to come to work here every day.
Thank you, Ms. River, for joining the Shamrock team and becoming part of the Tradition of Excellence!
