Mrs. Schlafer is the American Government, Current Events, Health, and Geography teacher. She’s been teaching for forty-four years.
Mrs. Schlafer graduated from Southeast Missouri State in 1973. Her degree is a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in history and sociology. She says she has always been fortunate enough to teach social studies and to be a secondary social studies teacher.
For fun, Mrs. Schlafer likes to read, garden, bake, go bowling with her husband, and bike. Her favorite movie is the Harry Potter movie series. She likes to watch The Big Bang Theory as well. One of her pet peeves is when a student borrows something but doesn't put it back in the right place when they return it.
When asked what inspired her to become a teacher, she responded, “I always enjoyed school, and my World History teacher was very interesting.”
Mrs. Schlafer next commented on why she wanted to work in New Haven and what her favorite thing about it is: “My husband was the elementary principal and we wanted to work in the same school district. The size of the school allows the teachers and students to interact on a one to one basis when they need help. I also am inspired by how the students strive to achieve good grades and to do the best in competitions.”
Mrs. Schlafer was questioned what she is passionate about, and she replied with, “I suppose teaching is my passion. I am in my 44th year of teaching, and I still enjoy every day because everyday is unique.”
“It has been amazing to see the changes in education through the years,” Mrs. Schlafer commented. “Technology has definitely made teaching different.”
Thank you, Mrs. Schlafer, for being a part of the Tradition of Excellence. We are proud to call you a Shamrock.
