Amy boarded this ship with her parents 250 years ago on a mission to populate a planet “across the universe.” Now, Amy is the only earthborn human on this ship, and she does not fit in. There are over 3,000 residents on Godspeed, and they all have dark hair, olive skin, and dark eyes. The people that are shipborn don’t like this difference, which makes the people on the ship to rebel and cause problems for the future leader, Elder.
Throughout the series, a reader can relate to both of the main characters. Amy is a smart, intelligent girl who doesn’t let the people of the ship sway her personality. Elder is a strong leader and is more reserved than Amy. They aren’t complete opposites, but their relationship definitely adds to the characterization of the trilogy.
The futuristic theme of these books appeals to readers who enjoy reading about future possibilities! The story includes new technologies like devices similar to phones that are placed in the ear when the shipborns are born. Another type of technology is the medical advances. They have patches that are like nicotine patches but are used to calm people or make pain go away.
The final element that makes this series appealing to high school students is the romance between Elder and Amy. Regardless of the fact that they were born in two completely different places, they still find things in common. Elder is the guy that waits for the girl. He is the guy almost every girl today wants. He praises Amy, listens to her, and almost puts his feelings for her before anything else. Girls who haven’t met the perfect guy will enjoy reading all about Elder.
You won’t be able to find this series at the high school library. If you want to read this book now, you’ll have to go to the Scenic Regional Library in New Haven or find the book online.
This series is recommended for those who enjoy romance, science fiction, and action.
