On Friday, January 22, the New Haven High School junior varsity and varsity teams took on the Chamois Pirates for Pack the Gym.
This game’s Pack the Gym theme was Hawaiian style. Every student in attendance won spirit points for their class and double spirit points if they dressed according to the theme. The class with the most spirit points at the end of the year will be treated to a pizza and ice cream party. This time around, sophomores won the pack the gym event with a 88% class turnout.
The starting line-up for the junior varsity game was Mark Senecal (#30), Ethan Groner (#32), Aiden Bailey (#33), Aaron Penning (#4), and Abe Madden (#23).
Senecal led the boys with eight points followed by Madden with four points. Vedder, Groner, and Penning all contributed two points.
Due to Chamois low numbers, the junior varsity team only played two quarters. After the first quarter, the Shamrocks were winning 6-5, and pulled off a victory of 18-12.
The starting line-up for the varsity game was Jared Horstmann (#22), Justin Shockley (#21), Martin Lewis (#3), Keven McDowell (#12), and Brady Kruse (#5).
Shockley led the boys with six points followed by McDowell and Kruse with four points. Boehmer and Lewis contributed two points, and Horstmann contributed one.
Martin Lewis commented, “Even though the game ended in a loss, I think we played our strength in getting open looks, but failed to knock them down.”
During the halftime shootout, participants whose names were drawn out of of a bucket could compete for prizes based on the point value of the baskets made.
A layup won the participant candy, a free throw earned the participant a 6 pack of soda, a three pointer got the participant a Lancito pizza (up to 3 toppings), and a half court shot won the participant 25 dollars in coupons.
Participants in the first round were Emily Scheer and Joseph Rethemeyer. Participants in the second round were Maddie Fleer and Jake Glaser. Joseph, Emily, and Maddie all won candy, a six pack of soda, and a large pizza. Jake won candy.
After a long battle, the Shamrocks fell short to the Pirates. At the halftime, the score of the game was 8-13, and the final score was 19-34.
The Shamrocks will play the Chamois Pirates again tonight at 7:30 pm tonight in the Hermann Basketball Tournament. The game will be played in the Hermann Middle School gym.
“We are more prepared now this time around, if we play the game right, we can come back with a win tonight,” mentioned Martin Lewis.
