For the last game of their regular season, the New Haven Shamrocks took on the Fatima Comets at Fatima High School on October 15th. Both New Haven (Class 1) and Fatima (Class 2) are 2014 Final Four state tournament finalists. With both teams equally match, it was inevitable that the game would be a hard-fought battle.
In the first set, New Haven came out strong. Back and forth the set shifted leads between the Shamrocks and the Comets. In the end, the Fatima Comets came out on top, 25-21.
At this point in the game, emotions were running high for the Shamrocks. “After winning the second set, I felt that there was a burst of momentum on our [Shamrocks] side. We knew Fatima wasn’t going to go down without a fight, and we were prepared for that. Whoever was going to end up on top had to earn it, and our goal was to come out with a win,” says senior Lauren Bergner.
As result of winning the second set, New Haven sent the match to a third set to determine the winner of the two previous state-finalist teams. In the end, it was the Shamrocks who came out on top against the Comets, 25-20.
During this match, senior Lauren Bergner had 4 blocks, senior Emma Borcherding had 14 kills, and sophomore Lauren Gerlemann had 16 digs.
“Going into the game,” states Kim Hoffmann, “ I thought that the rest our season would be greatly impacted by how we played against Fatima. I think playing them for our last regular season game was huge because it really challenged us mentally and physically. Coming out with a win was what we really needed coming into the postseason.”
The Shamrocks start District tournament play against Chamois at 4:30 at Calvary Lutheran High School in Jefferson City on October 20.
