The week of Monday the 13th through Friday the 17th, Student Council arranged Leadership Week for the students at New Haven High School. The students were separated into 23 teams, were able to participate in Penny Wars, and got out of class early to take part in the Leadership Week assembly on Wednesday, the 15th.
Penny Wars is a competition that collects money for local families to pay their winter utility bills. Pennies added to each team’s bucket are positive, and all other change and dollar bills are negative. Through this competition, the students raised $378.75. Team Hippies won, donating more than $100 to local families.
On Monday, students were assigned their teams and received a bracelet related to their team name. Student Council members were in charge of assigning students to the correct teams.
Wednesday was the school-wide assembly with several student-engaging activities. The first activity was Limbo. Sheny Delgado won Limbo for her team, the Princesses, earning them 600 points.
Next was trivia. Teachers submitted a few questions each so there was a wide variety of questions. Students had 20 minutes to work as a group and complete all the questions. The Green Giants won, earning themselves 1000 points.
Tug-of-war took place next. All of the teams were put into a bracket to start with, then were divided off into a winners and losers bracket. Earning 1000 points, team Zebra won it all.
Twizzler Toss was a new game Student Council came up with. Each group received a plastic bag with a piece of copy paper, a rubberband, and a Twizzler inside. The objective was to toss the Twizzler into a box 5 feet away, using all of the objects in the bag. The teams that got the Twizzler in the box were the Tribal Knots, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Fairies, Ballerinas, Dashing Divas, and Dream Team, earning 500 points each.
The last game was M&M Golf, which Student Council also came up with. The goal was to push an M&M with a cardboard tube closest to a cup on the ground 5 feet away. Team I Love Soccer got first in this game, earning 500 points. In second was Blue Skies, earning 400 points. Earning 300 points was team Snow, getting third place. Dream Team earned 200 points, getting fourth place. In fifth place was Patriots, getting 100 points.
Senior Lydia Pataky thought, “Tug-of-war is always my favorite! I love to see everyone get competitive and how strong some people are. Everyone becomes so aggressive and it’s always fun.”
Student Council vice president Michelle Bahena stated, “I always love Leadership Week but Penny Wars is my favorite. This year I was a little worried because there wasn't a lot of money in the jars but on the last day everyone pulled together and raised a lot of money!”
Student Council sponsor Katie Borcherding commented, “Every year gets a little easier for me. The first year it was hard to get everything together for the assembly and work out the timing. My favorite part about the assembly is the trivia because everyone puts their heads together and is being an active participant.”
Mrs. Borcherding also proudly stated, “The students did an amazing job. Penny Wars was a huge success. They raised almost $400 which is $100 more than last year.”
Team Hippies won for the most money collected during Penny Wars, collecting more than $111.49. Team Polka Party won the most points overall, receiving 3,103 points. The winners were treated to a meal from the Ice Cream Shoppe Friday at lunch.
