Wednesday, September 30, was the New Haven softball team’s annual tailgate. The tailgate was sponsored by the Bank of Franklin County. The bank provided free hot dogs and water bottles for those who showed up early. The water bottle design was by New Haven senior, Emma Borcherding.
The games were against the Bourbon Warhawks. New Haven won the Varsity game with a score of 11-0 ending with mercy rule in the 5th inning and lost the Junior Varsity game with a score of 5-6 in three innings. The JV game had a three run limit each inning.
The first run of the Varsity game was scored by Nicki Zeitzmann in the first inning. Alison Long, Emily Scheer, and Abby Perdue also scored during the game. Liz Hughes scored a triple in the 5th inning, ending the game by mercy rule.
The crowd showed their spirit by huddling in blankets and sweatshirts against the cold to cheer on the girls for every run they scored. The team was excited, and cheered before every pitch when they were up to bat.
During the JV game, Claire Laune pitched two innings and Sarah McKernan pitched one inning. In the last inning, for a little fun, the girls decided to switch positions. Nicki Zeitzmann, who usually plays shortstop, went out to left field. Alison Long, who usually plays third base, played shortstop. Lastly, Emily Scheer, who usually pitched, played third base.
The team’s last regular season game is Monday, October 5th, at Linn. The team will play for Class 1 District 4 Districts on Wednesday, October 7th, 6:00 P.M. at Clopton against the Silex Owls. Good luck ladies!
